Microsoft's own UX bugs (2): network blocking validation information in Windows

Source: Internet
Author: User

From Windows XP, Windows Firewall will prevent all programs from connecting to the network by default. When the program attempts to access the network for the first time, the system will pop up the following dialog box for users to select:

The three buttons are called "Keep blocked", "unblocked", and "prompt me later" in the corresponding Chinese version ". Literally, it seems to indicate:

  • Keep blocking: stops this program from accessing the network, and users cannot use it normally.
  • Unblocking: allow the program to access the network, and the user can use it normally.
  • Ask later: Stop now, and then prompt the user to select

In fact, it takes a long time for the user to understand the whole thing (including questions and answers ). In a similar situation, if you want to delete a file, the system will ask you if you want to delete it. The "yes" and "no" options are provided (slightly different in Vista ). For users who are used to these prompts, the content of such dialogs looks exactly the same:

If you map it to the network connection blocking just now, remove "prompt me later" (the user will usually think this is "canceled"), and the rest will be:

Have you noticed that this is totally different from the real functions of the first two buttons in the original dialog box! What's even more terrible is that if the user mistakenly presses "keep blocking (continue to block)", the user may not be able to find any recovery path.

Windows
The security warning dialog box is designed from the perspective of "blocking all access by default and protecting users from attacks" to warn users when malicious programs secretly run. However, in most cases, this is because users use their own software. The real thinking in the user's mind is "I want to do anything I want, but you can remind me of possible risks ". The inversion of the foothold leads to such a UX problem.

In this case, clearer icons (such as green and red) can be used to help users quickly identify and avoid misoperations.
