At 98, for the English version of the operating system to correctly display and handle Chinese content, we must install some special Chinese platform in the system, such as Chinese star, Richwin and so on. Now it's not so cumbersome under Windows XP, because the operating system is already directly capable of supporting multiple languages, but requires a few settings.

The correct display of Chinese

The first thing to solve is the correct display of Chinese. Open the Control Panel, click "Data, Time, Language, and Regional Options", and then click "Regional and Language Options", pop-up a window, open the "Languages" of the window tab, select the Install files for the East Asian languages (install Eastern Asian Language Support) (figure I), and then click Apply. The system may require you to insert the operating system's installation CD and copy some files, which will be restarted when completed. Start well, all Chinese documents and Chinese Web pages can be opened and used normally.

Many people on the internet said that for the English version of Windows XP, as long as the installation of Chinese language packs can correctly display Chinese, in fact, this is wrong. The Chinese language pack can only make the English version of the operating system's interface from English into Chinese, and to install the Chinese language pack, but also first installed East Asian language support; second, the Chinese language pack can only be installed in English version of Windows XP Professional, the home version can not install language packs; Multi-country language packs do not sell and provide downloads, but are intended for some large business users, and individuals and small users are not easily available.
The correct use of Chinese software

After installing the East Asian language support, all Chinese files can be opened, but when you install and run the software may find that some of the Chinese software is still not normal installation and operation, because the interface is still garbled. But why do some Chinese programs can be displayed normally?

In fact, all the Chinese software that can be displayed properly is Unicode compliant, such as Microsoft "target=" _blank "class=blue> Microsoft Office without additional setup, The software can be used on any language platform (provided that Chinese fonts are already installed on platforms in different languages). But some programs that do not conform to the Unicode standard have some trouble using them, but there are settings in Windows XP.

Also, under the regional and Language Options settings in Control Panel, open the Advanced tab, where there is a select a Language to match the Language version of the Non-unicode programs you want the settings for "use" (Figure II), this is where you set up your language environment for non-Unicode programs. If you compare non-Unicode programs in Simplified Chinese, select "Chinese" from the Drop-down menu here, and then confirm and restart the computer. This will allow you to use these programs normally.

How to quickly switch language settings for non-Unicode programs

As I've learned earlier, for non-Unicode programs, you can use them as long as you specify a locale in the Control panel, but most Chinese people may have encountered this situation: non-Unicode programs that need to run both Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. This can be done, for a variety of reasons, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese text encoding is different, which also caused the use of Simplified Chinese operating system on the traditional Chinese non-Unicode program will show a tangle of problems, although we can set a language environment for non-Unicode programs, But for people who often need to use multiple language software, it's a hassle to have to restart the computer each time you reset the locale, on the other hand, you can only set a locale at the same time, and it's difficult to run multiple language programs simultaneously.

In this case, the conventional approach is to continue to use the previous Chinese platform, but now Windows has its own solution, is to rely on Microsoft's AppLocale tools.

After the download installation is successful, you can start AppLocale from the Start menu, the software interface is very simple, click "Next", then you can see the Tu San interface, there are two options, if you are ready to install a new non-Unicode program, select "Add or Remove Programs ", then click the" Browse "button to locate the installer; If you are using a non-Unicode program that is already installed, select" Lunch an Application "and click the" Browse "button, and select the executable file for the program you want to run. Click "Next" after the program will need you to choose the type of language you want to use, if you install or run the program is traditional Chinese, in the Drop-down menu, select "Chinese (Traditional)", and then continue to point "next", and Point "finish" to end the setting. Then the selected program will start to run automatically, and the previous garbled also all normal display.

After testing, the AppLocale tool works for most non-Unicode programs, but unfortunately the software is currently only available on Windows XP and WindowsServer 2003.
