When we do not lose Exchange Server to the enterprise, the system will automatically generate a default database, such as Mailbox database 0123456789, such a 10-digit encoding mailbox, looks rather unfriendly, and bad memory, And it has a significant impact on some of the interface operations or command-line operations of our Exchange administrators later on . In order to facilitate future management and maintenance, it is also easy for us to be able to classify the database very well, we usually delete the default database, re-create a friendly, concise, easy to distinguish the new mailbox database, of course, can be one, or can be multiple, this according to their own planning. So we can simply delete the default, and then create a new mailbox database? The answer is in the negative.

In this default mailbox database, there are some very important functional exchange native mailboxes, including system mailboxes, migration mailboxes, and federated mailboxes that act as mailbox media for some exchange-specific features. This time, there will be a lot of people ask, then why these mailboxes I do not see in the Exchange ECP management console? The answer is that these feature mailboxes are hidden mailboxes and can only be seen by running special commands through the Exchange PowerShell command line.

In order to use these functions properly in the future, we must retain their presence. In other words, before we delete the default mailbox database, we need to move them to a secure location before deleting the default database. So this article is mainly to introduce you how to move the hidden mailbox and delete the default mailbox database.

The order of our operations today is as follows:

1. Create a new mailbox database

2. Find all available mailboxes in the native database

3. Move all available mailboxes, including the quorum mailbox, to the newly created database

4. Delete the original mailbox database

OK, Next, we'll do the field operation once.

1. Open the Exchange PowerShell command-line mode and use the command Get-mailbox to locate all mailboxes in the native database

2. Use the command get-mailbox–arbitration to find all hidden arbitration mailboxes

3. Using the command Get-mailbox discovery* | New-moverequest–targetdatabase "MAILDB01" moves the mailboxes in the default database to the new target database.

BTW: You can also use new-moverequest-identity ' [email protected] '-targetdatabase ' maildb01 ' command to move individual mailboxes separately.

4. Using the command Get-mailbox–arbitration | New-moverequest–targetdatabase "Mailbox database 1" Moves all the quorum mailboxes to the new mailbox database.

BTW: You can use Get-moverequest to view the status of mailbox moves.

5. Once the above steps have been completed and all mailboxes have been moved from the default database to the new database, we can delete the previous default database.

On the Exchange ECP console, delete the default mailbox directly, and the system will have a default prompt, click "OK" or "Yes".

6. When the database is deleted, the system will also remind the user to manually delete the database EDB file under the database storage path, and we can also manually delete the log file of the database to free up disk space.
