Mozilla officially terminated the development of Firefox OS, the operating system of niche mobile phones
A few years ago, the smartphone operating system market was booming. Mozilla, a veteran browser Firefox developer, also launched a mobile phone operating system "Firefox OS", hoping to enter the low-price mobile phone market, chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE have also launched Firefox mobile phones.
However, a few days ago, Mozilla announced that it would no longer develop Firefox OS systems and other hardware, which means that Firefox OS has come to its end at least in the mobile phone market.
According to a US technology news website, Mozilla previously sent similar news at the internal Developer Conference. Recently, the company officially confirmed the news to the media, that is, the development of the Firefox OS Operating System is terminated.
In early 2013, Firefox OS was officially released. Based on HTML5 technology, this operating system can greatly simplify the development of mobile application software. Mozilla is aware of high competition in the operating system market, so it is positioned in cheap mobile phones in Developing Countries, Mozilla even hopes to reach the lowest price for smartphones to $25.
Firefox mobile phone systems have indeed received support from some mobile phone manufacturers, especially Chinese enterprises that want to occupy low-price mobile phones in developing countries, including Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel brands owned by TCL.
Many Firefox mobile phones were listed one after another, but they were not recognized by consumers. In addition, world-class mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and HTC did not accept Firefox.
As we all know, in the mobile operating system market, Google's open-source Android system and Apple's iOS system have become two monopolized players, and their shares continue to expand, android has a global share of 85%. At the same time, shares of other operating systems continue to decline, among which the Microsoft WP system, which once kept a glimmer of hope, has now fallen to nearly 1.7%, while the BlackBerry 10 system, basically, it has evaporated from the market (the company launched Android phones ).
In the context that WP and BlackBerry are hard to protect themselves, it is quite difficult for the "backend" Firefox system to survive.
Mozilla told the media that one of the reasons for Firefox OS system failure was that it could not provide a good user experience on a smart phone.
Some insiders said that in the development of mobile Internet technology, the status of WEB and HTML5 is declining. Local apps are recognized by users for their smooth user experience, which is a difference between user experience and smoothness, the Firefox system may fail.
However, Mozilla only announced the failure of Firefox OS in the smartphone market. Ari Jaaksi, the company's senior vice president, tweeted that, they will continue to use the Firefox system on other connected devices, which will create a new future.
Firefox OS is compatible with other hardware devices. In the middle of this year, Panasonic launched a smart TV with Firefox system for the first time. According to media reports, this TV set can better support web services and applications.
It is not clear whether Panasonic will continue to adopt the Firefox system in new models after Mozilla announces a project failure.
Prior to Firefox OS, another niche operating system, LG Electronics's webOS system, acquired from Hewlett-Packard, had also been defeated in the mobile phone market. LG has now moved the operating system to Smart TVs, smart watches, and other devices.
In addition, almost the same as Firefox OS, Samsung Electronics also launched its own operating system Tizen-based smart phones, still targeting the cheap machine market in developing countries. According to reports, Tizen mobile phones are selling well in India and other countries. Samsung plans to launch more models and even a more expensive mid-range models. Samsung has also convened some third-party developers to develop clients for Tizen.
However, the industry generally believes that it is extremely difficult for Samsung Tizen to break through the monopoly of Android and iOS and become the "third place" with a substantial share.
