SMS and MMS differences

Sms,short Messaging Service SMS Service, text-based SMS can be sent via mobile devices such as mobile phones. The term SMS was first introduced in the early 80, but it began to enter the commercial market until the early 90, and until 1999, the business spread rapidly across the world, with a continuing explosive growth trend. Can just enter the 21st century, people also put forward ems--enhanced Message service Enhanced SMS service, in addition to text, it can provide simple picture and voice of short message services, in June 2001, several mobile giants unite to unify EMS standards, and to produce a mobile phone with this function, but without Nokia's support, it will soon be over. So the handset industry's leading boss-nokia why not support EMS? Because Nokia believes that the MMS era will soon come, there is no need to regenerate a transitional standard.

(1) SMS is the earliest SMS business, is now the highest penetration of a short-message business.
At present, SMS is only set up a text in the phone and then sent to a friend, simple and easy to use, the length of this text message is limited to 140 bytes. SMS is popular with users for its simple and convenient use, but it is always the first generation of wireless data services, and there are limitations on the content and application of technical standards.

SMS uses a store-and-forward mechanism. The work of the SMS delivery packet is done by the SMS Center in the mobile network instead of the end user, and if the user is not in the service area, the text message is stored in the message center, and then forwarded to him after the user appears. The delivery confirmation mechanism is also used. In the Circuit Exchange Data Environment, the connection is end-to-end, so the user is able to know whether the connection is complete, and data transmission situation, but in the GPRS environment, the terminal attached to the GPRS carrier is "always online", it is ready to transparently (relative to the user) to transmit or receive data, in this way, The task of checking whether a packet is sent successfully falls on the user's head, and its corresponding cost is higher than SMS for each packet data business.

(2) EMS enhanced SMS Service, SMS enhanced version, is the SMS to MMS Springboard.
In addition to the advantages of EMS can be sent as SMS text messages, but also can send simple images, sounds and animations and other information, can still run in the original SMS running network, the delivery channels and operations are not different. The standard is open, and any third-party company or individual interested in EMS can develop application software and services on this platform.

EMS integrates simple tones, pictures, sounds, animations, text, and then displays on an EMS phone, for example, when an exclamation point appears in a text message, or a simple black-and-white picture and text and sound effects are displayed simultaneously.
EMS is an enhanced version of SMS, but also the use of signaling channels, through the SMS Center to store and forward text messages, the implementation of the principle is similar, do not need to upgrade the base network. The upgrade from SMS to EMS is transparent and implementation of EMS has little impact on existing SMS centers.
EMS to the existing SMS Center to do the biggest change is the carrier billing system, after all, EMS and SMS belong to different categories of business, an EMS message capacity may be several times the SMS, in the EMS some format words occupy more space than SMS, so the pricing strategy should not take "one-size-fits-all" scheme. In this case, the SMS center needs to add some modules, record the relevant technical values and generate the corresponding call detail records.

(3) MMS means multimedia SMS service.
MMS is conceptually similar to SMS and EMS and can be understood as the evolution of SMS to multimedia. However, unlike SMS and EMS, MMS has little or no limitations on the size or complexity of information content. MMS not only transmits text messages, but also transmits images, images and audio, so the biggest change of MMS is that the operators can develop more diversified mobile communication services. MMS can send and receive multimedia text messages, but also can send and receive messages containing attachments. From the user's point of view, multimedia applications will be the key to attracting them to use.

From a technical point of view, MMS is definitely not as simple as SMS technology, said simple, MMS is encapsulated in the WAP protocol on top of the high-level application (Note: Here is only the package of protocols, and does not appear WAP browser itself), using this high-level application can be implemented including images, audio information, The transmission of information, including video information, data and text, and other multimedia information. Some in the industry see it as a substitute for e-mail, some of it as a postcard electronic version, of course, more as a multimedia SMS. Like the radio to the development of television, multimedia text messages and the original comparison of ordinary text messages, in addition to the basic text information, but also with a wealth of color pictures, sound, animation and other multimedia content. Through MMS, mobile phones can send and receive multimedia messages, including text, sound, images, video, MMS support mobile cards, mobile phone pictures, cell phone screensavers, mobile maps, business cards, cartoons, interactive video and other multimedia services.

MMS can automatically and quickly transfer user-created content. It is primarily addressed by the receiver's phone number, so that MMS communication can be performed between terminals. MMS also supports email addressing, so the information can be passed between the terminal and the email.

As an emerging mobile data service, MMS needs many cooperation and support, including network operators, equipment manufacturers, content providers and so on, and the positive attitude of MMS has made MMS ready.
However, the implementation of MMS is not an easy thing, in order to achieve a new bearer business, network infrastructure needs to be updated, MMS terminal must be popular, and, but also have rich, exciting content to promote the development of applications.
