I am amd64 dual-core 3800 + and nforce 7600gt in 1 GB memory, most of the 3D effects are enabled, very smooth.
If you are planning to purchase a new video card, we recommend that you select a lower level than the "latest highest configuration;
Try to install the latest and most complete Ubuntu version. I installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 amd64 DVD.

After the Ubuntu system is installed, you can usually start the graphical interface to log on,
However, this does not mean that the video card driver has been installed,

On the GUI, choose system> System Management> New Software Package Manager"

If it is a 64-bit CPU system, the system may prompt "/usr/lib32/libgl. so.1" error when installing envyng,
Solution: click "application"-"attachment"-"terminal" in the taskbar and enter the following command:
Sudo ln-S/usr/lib64/usr/lib32
Then install envyng to complete the installation.

(3) What if the black screen of the computer is restarted after the video card is installed?

Press CTRL + ALT + F1 to switch to the terminal. Let's first find the problem, log on to the terminal, and enter the command:

The two commands mean to view the error (or warning) information when the GUI is started.

If there are not many output error messages and there are only one or two lines, you can copy them on a piece of paper.
What if there is a large string of output error messages? I copied it very tired.
Okay. Run the following command:

More/var/log/xorg.0.log | grep "(EE)"> 123

In this way, the error information can be saved in the 123 file,
After a while, we can go back to the graphic interface and find a solution or ask for help online based on the error message.

(4) When a new video card driver is installed, the screen is black. How can I return to the graphic interface? Can I use XP only?
Neither.
If you have installed the Ubuntu system and can use images by default, you can restore it to its original state.
Restart the system, and select (recovery mode) in the grub Startup menu, which is the second item.
Example of my computer: Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (recovery mode)
Then you can see a menu, select "Fix X" and press enter, and then select the first item to start normally.
Oh, is the graphic interface back?
After returning to the graphic interface, you can go online to find a solution or post for help based on the error message.

What? No menu available at startup?
This is because you did not check the "starter" Installation option when installing the Ubuntu system ".
What should I do? Installing grub is not covered in this article. Otherwise, it will be too long. You can find a method on the Internet.

(5) If everything goes well, the official driver of the video card has been correctly installed.
Take my computer NVIDIA as an example. The NVIDIA logo can be seen when the graphic interface is started,
You can use "nvidia x Server setting" in "System"-"System Management" in the taskbar.
In the taskbar "System"-"System Management"-"hardware driver", there is a red "UNUSED", which is okay.

If other problems occur during video card installation, check the/var/log/xorg.0.log file,

To start the 3D desktop, you also need to check the 3D window in the effects (special effects), and the system will prompt "";

In my experience, right-click the blue compiz fusion icon in the upper right corner of the desktop,
Select reload Window Manager (reload window manager) and refresh the desktop.
If the computer configuration is too low, the cup is not fast enough, and the memory is not enough, some problems may occur when running the 3D desktop.
If reload window manager still fails,
Right-click the blue compiz fusion icon in the upper-right corner of the desktop and select "exit ".
If the problem persists, log out or press CTRL + ALT + backspace to restart the graphic interface.

I used mencoder and FFMPEG to convert Ogg (OGV) to Avi or MPEG,
