With the gradual use of IPv6, our integration with the original IPv4 network has become a key issue in the current transitional phase. We will not go into details about multiple types of excessive technologies here. This article will introduce the basics of the multicast translation gateway model for IPv6 multicast.
Multicast translation gateway Model
The multicast translation gateway (MTG) model is a prototype of the gateway protocol conversion solution based on the Linux2.4 kernel 。
The MTG model is deployed in network 1, the MTG is deployed on the border between IPv4 and IPv6 networks. The MTG model regards IPv4 and IPv6 networks as two heterogeneous networks with equal status, the other side is a pure IPv6 network. The work of the gateway is also equivalent to IPv4 and IPv6: IPv6 hosts can be added to multicast groups where the multicast source is located in the IPv4 network, an IPv4 host can also be added to a multicast group where the multicast source is located in an IPv6 network 。
In IPv4, MTG acts as the IPv6 proxy and participates in IPv4 multicast. Similarly, MTG acts as the IPv4 proxy in IPv6. In the figure, MTG can be considered as a single dual-stack device, it can also be understood as a dual-stack network. In the MTG system, protocol conversion is performed between two proxies 。
Model Structure
Figure 2 The dotted box section shows the MTG model structure. It consists of IPv4 multicast proxy (MP4), IPv6 multicast proxy (MP6), and multicast protocol converter (MT) address (AM), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) interface, MTG Management Information Library (MIB) composition 。
