Installing multiple Windows 2008 with differential disk and Sysprep technology in Hyper-V

The advent of Windows 2008 has made virtualization technology go further. With its own hyper-V technology, I believe a lot of friends like beginning something new already in use.

The introduction to Hyper-V is not to say much about the network, and the main purpose of this blog post is to share how to build several Windows Server 2008 installations using the differential disk and Sysprep features during the Hyper-V process.

For reasons of cost, when learning about a new technology or product, you will choose to build an experimental environment in a virtual machine before you deploy to a production environment. But how to build it quickly? How do you save disk space?

Speaking of this all have to say that Hyper-V differential disk technology, this method is to choose to build a virtual machine system (GUEST OS), and related settings, such as desktop. The differential disk is then established as a template (which is strictly the installed hard disk of the virtual machine system) and is assigned to the new virtual machine for use by this differential disk. When you use a new virtual machine, it will still start the system with Windows 2008来 in the master, but any changes made in this system thereafter will be kept in the differential disk without changing the contents of the master. This not only creates new system shortcuts, but also saves disk space. This is a direct hook with money, not to mention saving time is also saving money!

Differential disk technology makes it a problem to save hard disk space, because a new system derived from the master has the same SID. This will bring problems to the experimental environment. Thankfully, Windows 2008 is installed with the Sysprep tool in the system (you can also use the NEWSID.EXE tool) to change the SID of the newly derived system to make these problems no longer a problem.

OK, a lot of nonsense, start to go as follows:

First, install a new Windows 2008 system with a differential disk

This section focuses on how to use differential disk technology to install a new Windows 2008 system, and note that a new Windows 2008 virtual machine system has been installed using Hyper-V and is named Win2k8-base and used as a master.

1, open the Hyper-V Manager, in the right control Panel select Rickyfang (depending on the installation, please distinguish), right-new---hard disk. (Figure 1)

2, in the pop-up window, select "Difference" and Next: (Figure 2)

3, in the "specified name and location" interface, select the name and location of the virtual hard disk file, note that this is the new hard disk file, not the master. And Next: (Figure 3)

4, in the "Configure Disk" interface, browse to the already established Windows 2008 virtual machine on the disk, as the parent hard disk, that is, the so-called master disk. Then, click Finish. (Figure 4)

5, open the Hyper-V Manager, in the right control Panel select Rickyfang (depending on the installation, please distinguish), right-new---virtual machine: (Figure 5)

6. In the "Specify name and Location" interface, in the "name" and "store the virtual machine in another Location" item, fill in or select the appropriate content. And Next: (Figure 6)

7, in the "Allocate memory" interface, keep the default 512MB memory, in the virtual machine, although Windows 2008 memory consumption, but 512MB is enough, if you run some large applications such as SQL, then add rows. And next.

8, in the "Configure the Network" interface, choose a good previously defined virtual network connection, in my Hyper-V virtual network defined Two types, one is the Internet is a NAT, here at random choose one such as the Internet. And next.

9, in the "Connect the virtual hard disk" interface, cancel out the default "create virtual hard disk" in front of the hook. and enable "Use an existing virtual hard disk" and browse to the location of the virtual disk that you created earlier (the virtual hard disk file is the one that you just created with the master). and click Finish.
