MySQL 5.1 Reset the root user password under Windows

Under Windows:
Open a command-line window and stop the MySQL service (this does not go to MySQL directory):

net stop MySQL

Enter the MySQL installation directory under the Bin folder

Perform:

Mysqld--skip-grant-tables

Also open a command-line window, dos into the MySQL bin directory to execute

D:\software\xampp\mysql\bin>mysql

Mysql>use MySQL;

Mysql>update User Set Password=password ("New_pass") where user= "root";

Mysql>flush privileges; Update permissions

mysql>exit;

Remember to write the semicolon at the end of Line 4.

Then restart the MySQL service:

net start MySQL
