Only a few years ago, MySQL was recognized as the King of Open source databases, but as NoSQL grew at a 82% CAGR, MySQL was at risk of being phased out of NoSQL in the Web application market.

The move to NoSQL has not only been a footnote to the trend in the IT industry, but also a glimpse of open source-driven industrial innovation, just like a storm.

This has nothing to do with Oracle's management of MySQL, and in fact, Oracle is dedicated to MySQL, devoting significant resources to improving technology and nurturing communities. As Matthew Aslett, research manager at 451 study, said: "The MySQL ecosystem is healthier and more dynamic than ever, Oracle is fully supportive of core products and offers a wide range of complementary products and services to enhance its competitiveness." ”

So what's wrong with MySQL? Aslett his views at an open-source business meeting.

He argues that the vast majority of companies that have abandoned MySQL because of Oracle have generally "praised" the MySQL management work of Oracle, with a very small number of "reviews".

In fact, 451 has predicted that the MySQL market value will reach $664 million in 2015, and the CAGR is "healthy" by 40%.

As you can see, the only "unhealthy" factor in this chart above is the rapid rise of nosql. Aslett pointed out that 12.7% of the abandoned MySQL enterprise directly into the embrace of NoSQL, but this has little impact on MySQL installation base. The most common MySQL replacement is actually PostgreSQL. But even PostgreSQL is not a threat to MySQL's installation base.

In other words, NoSQL is not much of a threat to MySQL's installation base in general.

But in Web applications, NoSQL is a significant threat to MySQL, although few people change the support desk database for existing applications, but a growing number of new Web applications have opted for NoSQL roads. 451 research says: "New projects that emphasize high scalability, performance, and flexibility are increasingly using NOSQL database technology." ”

Back in 2009, then MySQL CEO Marten Mickos that MySQL should be a part of the Sun company was acquired by Oracle, because MySQL does not have a direct competitive relationship with Oracle. "MySQL is growing at a crazy rate, but that doesn't hurt Oracle," Mickos says. MySQL is primarily for Web applications. Oracle is an older, enterprise-grade legacy system. ”

Today, the same story is happening, and NoSQL is conquering the Web App market at a frantic pace, while MySQL is losing it.

The change is so fast, it's unbelievable. The concept of NoSQL came out in 1998, but not until 2009, when MySQL was the undisputed king of open source databases, but MySQL's dominance was very shaky, Aslett in a series of reports titled 451Research:

In terms of server market share, the traditional data center Windows platform occupies 70% of the market, while Linux is only 30%. But when people choose to build the operating system of the cloud computing platform, the market share of Windows and Linux is completely reversed.

Cloud computing is a long-term concept, but cloud computing thrives when open-source software lowers the cost of building cloud computing, and similar changes occur in data mining and data warehousing until Hadoop dramatically lowers big data mining costs while improving performance, big data is really popular.

We are now in the era of "hyper-innovation", where the biggest competitor of open source software is no longer a faltering traditional business software, but another open source software. NoSQL's threat to MySQL in the Web application market is a good example, and the same is true for Hadoop, where choosing between competing open source software becomes increasingly difficult, but it also means that open source software is getting better at an unprecedented rate.
