Netflix now provides more support. It hopes to bring out-of-the-box Netflix playback to Ubuntu. Now you only need to updateNetwork Security Services (NSS)Service library.

Native Netflix? Neato.

In an email to the Ubuntu developer list, Netflix's Paul Adolph explains the current situation:

"If the NSS version is 3.16.2 or later, Netflix can play it in Chrome, a stable version of Ubuntu 14.04. If the version exceeds 14.04, Netflix will make some adjustments to prevent users from modifying the User-Agent parameters of the browser before playing the video ."

[LCTT note: the original text here is "14.02". It may be a mistake. It should be Ubuntu 14.04.]

The soon-to-be-released Ubuntu 14.10 provides the updated NSS v3.17, while most users currently use the version Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to provide v3.15.x.

NSS is a series of client and server application libraries that support multiple security features, including SSL, TLS, PKCS and other security standards. To enable Ubuntu LTS users to use native HTML5 Netflix as soon as possible, Paul asked:

"What is the process of bringing a new NSS version into the update stream? Or can someone provide me with the correct contact information? "

Netflix provided HTML5 video playback on Windows 8.1 and OSX Yosemite earlier this year without any additional downloads or plug-ins. You can now use the extended features of encrypted media.

Although we are waiting for progress in this discussion (and hope to solve it completely), you can still modify HTML5 Netflix through the instructions on Ubuntu.

Update: 9/19

After this article is published, Canonical has confirmed that the required version of the NSS library will be updated in the next "Security Update" as planned, and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is expected to be updated within two weeks.

This news made Netflix's Paul Adolph very happy. In response, he said that when the software package was updated, he would "Remove the User-Agent filter for playback of Netflix HTML5 videos in Chrome, you no longer need to modify UA ".
