This link can relay the traffic from an AP that does not have an Ethernet connection to another AP with an Ethernet connection. WDS allows up configure four point-to-point links between access points. Generally, the central AP supports up to four remote wireless relay AP access modes 。
Although the wireless relay mode makes wireless coverage easier and more flexible, it requires support from high-end APs. If a problem occurs in the central AP, the entire WLAN will be paralyzed and Redundancy cannot be guaranteed, therefore, the "wireless roaming mode" is the most common in applications, and this "relay mode" is used only in special situations where network cabling cannot be performed, it can be used in places with open spaces and difficult to lay ethernet cables, such as large open office areas, warehouses, and docks. There are two networks that are too isolated to transmit network signals, set a relay AP in the middle. This AP only acts as a relay 。

The LAN between buildings needs to be connected to each other. A company wants to connect all the networks of production plants, workshops, and management centers close to each other to facilitate resource sharing and unified management, to maximize the utilization of information, an independent internal LAN in the teaching building, student dormitory, and computing center on a university campus also needs to be established together, it is convenient for students and teachers to access campus networks and the Internet. To connect to various local networks, the wireless distribution system technology can be used. When the distance is too long, the signal is weak, when there are obstacles in the middle, we need to use the wireless relay mode in the wireless distribution system to connect to build a network 。
