Microsoft's
new inet software enables Microsoft. NET services to support Java(2002.01.28) from: Sadie
Recently, Halcyon company said it would release the first beta version of instant. Net (INet), which is designed for Microsoft Visual Studio. NET Developer Software Design Plug-ins. It transforms xml-based. NET network services into Java and enables them to run on any Java-enabled server software.
One advantage of inet is that companies that build the IT infrastructure on Java EE and Windows software can continue to build software for Microsoft code, but run on servers that are supported by Microsoft, such as those coming from rival BEA Systems, Sun Microsystems Inc. and IBM products.
Linux and Mac OS X operating systems also support Java and can serve as hosts for the. NET network services that use inet. This way, if the company decides to build on. NET services, which will provide them with more options for the software environment in which the service runs. Microsoft may remain silent about inet, because the software provider may not support the application of the Java programming language to replace its own technology.
. NET network services can only run on servers that use Microsoft software, because it uses a technology called CLI, which is the core component of the implementation of network services. Like the JVM hosting the client and running a Java application, the CLI is the engine that the. NET application is running on. The Halcyon inet tool replaces the CLI. The company has developed a runtime environment that uses specialized technologies that are built with this tool. NET network services can run within the JVM.
It works by building a. NET Network service within Visual Studio NET and compiling it into a language called MSIL. The developer then uses the Halcyon Company's tool to convert MSIL to Java, which eventually translates the MSIL code into Java byte code.
Inet's first beta and Halcyon Java Runtime Environment can be downloaded free of charge on Halcyon's website http://www.halcyonsoft.com. The second beta version of the software is expected to be available in March and will soon be released as a candidate. Inet's first commercial release is expected to be available in July 2002.
