As a manufacturer and supplier of optical network equipment for many years, ZTE has been tracking and researching since the emergence of ASON technology, in particular, we have invested a lot of effort in the application of ASON in optical networks. The intelligent evolution of optical networks should consider the following points.

Currently, commercially available ASON products are mainly based on SDH, Which is mature for Intelligent Service scheduling of VC4 particles. However, there are still many uncertainties about intelligent service scheduling of VC12 particles, for example, the increase in the number of connections poses a challenge to the computing capability and Stability of the device, as well as higher requirements on the low-level cross capability of the transmission plane. In the future, services in the telecom network will gradually develop in a segmented direction; the proportion of VC-based services will gradually decrease. While the intelligent evolution of Optical Networks, how to maximize the advantages of ASON and how to efficiently combine with traditional optical networks to achieve smooth transition.

How can we increase the ROI?
Based on the above considerations, ZTE believes that the intelligent evolution of optical networks should be divided into the following four stages. Here we divide the network layers according to the typical model, that is, the backbone network, the metro core layer, the metro convergence layer, and the metro access layer. The intelligence of Optical Networks begins with the trunk network, and then gradually extends down. Because the trunk network has a large amount of business, VC4 service scheduling is the main factor, in addition, it has high requirements for business protection and recovery, and it is easy to build a MESH network.

Whether or not VC12-based intelligent business scheduling is implemented in the aggregation/access layer is still subject to great uncertainty, which requires further research and exploration. Therefore, if we use the entire network ASON construction idea from the backbone layer to the access layer, there is a great deal of technical risk and investment risk.

The goal and biggest advantage of ASON is to achieve SC exchange-type connections. Exchange-type connections require the support of UNI interfaces. UNI interfaces are interfaces between customer devices and smart optical networks. In a broad sense, non-intelligent traditional optical networks can also be seen as customer devices of smart optical networks. Therefore, in the intelligent evolution of optical networks, the UNI interface is introduced in the optical network to connect smart areas and non-smart areas. It not only effectively integrates ASON networks and traditional optical networks, but also maximizes the advantages of ASON to achieve true SC exchange connections, in addition, the stability and maturity of ASON can be fully verified in one step.

Phase 1: gradually intelligent Trunk Network

The ASON technology has been tested and verified by the test network. Firstly, it is applied in the national trunk line and Provincial Trunk Line networks to further verify the maturity and stability of the control plane.

In the second stage, the man can access the smart backbone network through the UNI interface.

After the first phase, the ASON network on the backbone layer has been fully constructed, the control plane is mature, and its stability has been verified, some customer devices, such as routers and switches, can also access the smart backbone network through the UNI interface. However, from the perspective of the entire optical network, the combination of the smart backbone network and the non-smart traditional network is loose, the efficiency of the entire network is low, and the Business configuration of many edge nodes still needs management plane intervention, so that the advantages of ASON are not fully utilized, so it is better to use the UNI interface, implementing the transition from SPC to SC is the first problem to be solved. Especially in some small and medium-sized cities, the city network is small, the necessity of intelligence is not big, and the time is not mature. It is the best choice to provide the UNI interface and smart backbone network connection in these man networks. This not only makes efficient use of the smart features of the backbone network, but also improves the efficiency of the entire network, makes the network layers clearer, and makes management and maintenance more convenient.

For some megacities, the traffic volume is large, the transmission network size is large, there are many nodes at the core layer, and the demand for intelligence is becoming more urgent. The ASON technology has gradually matured after the first stage of development, intelligent Implementation of the metro core layer in some major cities will further improve network efficiency and security.

Phase 3: The Metropolitan aggregation/access layer network accesses the smart core layer network through the UNI Interface

After the development and application of the second stage, the UNI interface has been mature and has been widely used. In this period, integrated smart network cabling has continued to develop in depth. On the one hand, ASON continues to expand to the urban core network of the major cities in China; on the other hand, the Urban Convergence/access layer network or other customer access devices can provide UNI interfaces to access the ASON network of the core layer. ASON technology has been fully applied in the network.

Phase 4: smart city aggregation/access Layer Networks

The Application of ASON continues to expand, further extending to the Metropolitan aggregation/access layer network. ZTE believes that whether or not this step can be achieved and whether it is necessary to implement it is still under many doubts and uncertainties, requiring us to patiently and closely follow up and research. With the passage of time and the development of technology and market, we will see more clearly.

Technology can develop by leaps and bounds, and it can be innovated, but the network must evolve gradually.
