Many new users face difficulties and confusions in compiling and packaging software. Ubuntu's apt-get method is indeed easy to use, but it also shields the learning space, for those who want to learn Linux well and are confused, the help of the following three programs should be able to effectively relieve your burden:
First, checkinstall
Installation command: sudo apt-get install checkinstall
Program function: tracks all files installed by "make install" or similar commands, and creates Slackware, RPM, or Debian installation packages for these files, then, add it to the database of installed software packages to easily uninstall or release the installation package.
For example:
Sudo./configure
Sudo make
Sudo make install
This is the usual software compilation and installation step. The bad thing is that once the compilation and installation fails, it is difficult to clean up the files,
Sudo./configure
Sudo make
Sudo checkinstall
In this way, a package is generated. If the package fails to be installed again, you can uninstall the package through the new IDE.
Second, apt-file
Installation command: sudo apt-get install apt-file
Program function: Download all available software packages on the server and the list of all files contained in these software packages. This helps you easily search for missing packages.
For example:
Sudo apt-file update // update the file list
Sudo apt-file search package name // search by file name
Sudo apt-file list package name // list all files in the given package
