Data centers provide transmission, processing, and storage services for data information. Therefore, they must be highly reliable and secure, and can adapt to the ever-increasing and changing requirements. Data Centers meet normal operation requirements and are related to multiple factors: location, power supply guarantee, network connection, and surrounding industries. Reliability is the most important part in data center planning. Communication, power supply, cooling, cable and security are all issues that need to be considered during planning to meet the requirements of efficient enterprise operation for normal operation time.
It is ideal that the data center can run 100% of the normal time. However, no matter how carefully you plan, construct, and maintain your data center, there will inevitably be interruptions. Therefore, you need to create a redundant system to avoid possible spof and minimize the interruption time. TIA-942 standards classify data centers into four levels of redundancy. High-level infrastructure is not prone to interruptions.
Level 1 Tier I) the most basic data center without redundant settings. The data center has only one communication channel, one power supply portal, and one HVAC system. Even an overhead anti-static floor can only meet the minimum load-bearing standard. The first-level data center usually needs to be shut down for maintenance every year. It is best to achieve a normal operation time of 99.67%, that is, there will be at least 29 hours of interruption every year.
Level 2 Tier II) introduces redundant components in a variety of infrastructure to achieve a slightly higher design normal operation time than the level 1 data center. These redundant components include the second communication channel, UPS and backup diesel generators, and the second HVAC system. Secondary data centers also need to be shut down once a year for maintenance. In the best case, the normal operation time can reach 99.75%, that is, the annual interruption time is less than 22 hours.
Level 3 Tier III) data centers that can be maintained without downtime-any major infrastructure downtime will not interrupt operations on hosts in the data center. This requires redundant components and redundant paths for communication, electrical, and HVAC. The floor has higher load-bearing capacity, and the access control of the building where the data center is located is stricter. Level 3 data centers require that the data centers be maintained and operated when various hosts are working normally. The best case is that the normal running time is increased to 99.98%, that is, the annual interruption time is less than 105 minutes.
Level 4 Tier IV) the data center provides multi-path and multi-device backup, which can maintain normal operation during planned downtime of any infrastructure. It also has the ability to defend against at least one of the worst unplanned events. All devices have redundant data and power cables for different routes. The division of different allocation regions can accurately reflect various handling events. It is the lowest requirement to prevent the damage caused by earthquakes. It also requires the ability to defend against typhoons, floods, and even terrorist attacks. Level 4 data centers require a normal operation time of 99.995% or higher, and interruptions will only occur in the case of planned fire drills or emergency power outages, the annual interruption time cannot exceed tens of minutes.
