OPEN-E Storage FC SAN/ISCSI performance test

With regard to the question of whether an ESXi host uses FC SAN storage or iSCSI storage, many people have been arguing about the difference in performance between the two, and black data uses OPEN-E to build a store to test the performance of both, and we hope to help.

One, open-e storage configuration
      
1, E3 1230*1, 16G memory, 64G ssd*1+1t stat*1, 4G HBA card, gigabit network card;

to ensure the integrity of the test, a volume group was created using a 7200-rpm SATA hard Drive in the OPEN-E storage, and then two volumes were created on the volume group: one based on the FC SAN (Installation system), and one based on iSCSI (using RDM);

third, the test method
after the FC San and iSCSI storage have been created, a WIN7 virtual machine is installed on the ESXi host, tested with Atto DISK Benchmart, and of course, the test software is also used by the more popular test software, testing the packet size from 0.5k to 8k.

Iv. Test Results

v. Conclusion

It is clear from the test result graph above that using the FC San for the same volume is about 3 times times more efficient than iSCSI, and the FC San is 1 time times more efficient than iSCSI for write operations, and the FC San outperforms iSCSI storage for performance.
for production environments, it is recommended to use FC SAN storage if possible, the main issue being the need to configure FC HBA cards and FC San switches using FC SAN storage, and of course iSCSI as a better-performing solution can also be applied to production environments, It is characterized by the need for a dedicated HBA card or switch.
