The customer will also be able to obtain the source code from the MySQL BitKeeper library, but it will not be provided as a source code tar package.

According to arnös, MySQL adopts this approach to "emphasize the goal of 'community edition for community users, Enterprise Edition for paying users' use. Zark Urlocker, vice president of the MySQL market, said the company's decision is not to alienate its community users. "If it makes people feel like this, this is a mistake in our communication ." Urlocker said the company tried to use it to prevent too many MySQL versions.

One of the things that many users are worried about is whether the community version will be inferior in the future. Urlocker said that MySQL "wants to ensure that the community version is also very reliable," but he admitted that some of the features that the company has added to the community "is not as powerful as we thought, it brings about some instability."

For this reason, the Company is revising its policy to move functionality into the community edition. Urlocer says MySQL will restrict new features in the community version test to avoid "unverified or not as stable as the Enterprise version.

Urlocker also noted with caution that there is no major difference in functions between the MySQL Enterprise Edition and the community edition, but the Enterprise edition has outstanding support services and upgrade plans, which are more suitable for enterprise users.

Although MySQL AB will not release the source code tar package, Urlocker indicates that MySQL is not prepared to prohibit the release of the source code of the Enterprise edition server provided by others.
