Opendaylight Summit SDN Progress Case Evolution

Traditional networks are now unable to meet increasing user demands, and traditional networks require fundamental refactoring and change, and these changes are being driven by software-defined networking (SDN).

Opendaylight (ODL) is a multi-Protocol SDN deployment controller architecture that supports high availability, modularity, scalability, scalability, and resiliency in a modern, diversified vendor network. Although SDN is still in its infancy and evolution is not fast, Opendaylight's executive director Neela Jacques points out that Opendaylight is helping to accelerate the development of a new era network.

Opendaylight since the release of the first version hydrogen 18 months ago, the number of contributors to the platform has increased by 300%. From the beginning of the 154 contributors to the helium version of 291, and then in the latest version of the lithium version, there are already 502 participants.

According to statistics, developers are holding hands to support open source, so other SDN open source projects also enjoy a gradual growth. From last June to June this year, 674 developers contributed to opendaylight or other open source projects (e.g. open vSwitch, open Contrail, ONOS, Ryu, floodlight, etc.). During this period, more than 24000 lines of code were submitted for record-opening open-sharing initiatives.

As individual developers contribute, a growing number of sponsoring sponsors are involved in the project, with the ClearPath Networks and Nokia Networks this week. More than 20 commercial products are built on the Opendaylight platform. We organized our first user survey to get a clearer picture of Opendaylight's plan, and the survey showed that 73% of users who had deployed or planned to deploy opendaylight,24% in the next 12 months were looking into the sidelines.

72% of respondents said that the top use case design Network function virtualization (NFV) deployment implementation; closely followed by a 54% of respondents are more concerned about cloud computing architecture, such as OpenStack, the third is 47% of people focus on traffic engineering and service quality; 41% of respondents are interested in network monitoring and analysis.

Interoperability and portability of software systems are increased in top-tier business drivers, adding additional operational efficiencies, increased innovation, and competitiveness.

But the survey also shows that there is room for improvement in the Opendaylight project, how should we improve it to develop better? The voice of many users is "documentation". This is a relatively common emerging open source project and has provided Community contribution modules and attention, and the community will be as helpful as possible, innovating training, providing site planning and providing first-hand new information sharing. We hope that in the next two versions we will be able to see the great efforts we have made in this regard. Software version updates follow a period of about 6 months. Following the previous version of the lithium version, the next issue of the beryllium version will be released by the end of this year.
