A spokesman for the Norwegian browser maker Opera said on Friday that Opera will submit its iPhone browser Opera Mini to Apple for review in a few weeks.
Opera claims that its browser speed will be 6 times faster than the iPhone's default Safari. It is unknown whether Apple will use this application. Asked when Opera Mini was officially submitted to Apple, Opera Spokesman Thomas Ford said: "I cannot give the exact time, but it should be very fast, within weeks."
Currently, the Opera Mini browser has logged on to BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Android platforms. It is reported that in the non-smartphone market, Opera Mini has more than 50 million users each month.
According to industry insiders, Apple is likely to reject Opera Mini's entry into the iPhone App Store. Because Apple had previously made it clear that third-party applications with the same features as the iPhone could not pass the review. Ford said Opera has no intention of putting pressure on apple. "The test has been completed and we are ready for the release. We want users to see its performance," he said ."
Apple has not commented on this.
Opera claims that Opera Mini is different from Safari in that it has the advantage of fast webpage loading, while Safari is more suitable for editing Google Documents and other data processing operations. Opera uses its server to run webpages and only load basic data to speed up page loading.
It is still uncertain whether Apple will allow another browser to appear on the iPhone. Ford said: "We think we fully comply with Apple's rules ."
