Operating system virtualization helps improve enterprise ecosystem

Operating system virtualization is a great tool for creating powerful and isolated multiuser environments, and many specific scenarios pose new challenges: container technology like Docker adds new levels of abstraction and automation to operating system-level virtualization platforms running on Linux.

Imagine that if there is a common virtual hosting environment in which the physical resources have to be safely split among many users, the user must be segmented and have their own "virtual space".

Now, to manage these users and their respective resources, a powerful tool has been deployed that allows the operating system kernel to have multi-user space instances that are isolated and segmented from each other. These user-space instances, also known as containers, enable users to operate in containers just as they do with their own dedicated servers. Administrators with the highest privileges on these containers can set policies around resource management, interaction with other containers in the operating system, and the necessary security parameters. At the same time, the administrator can manage and monitor these containers, and even set automatic policies for dynamic load balancing across nodes.

Operating system virtualization is a great tool for creating powerful and isolated multiuser environments. However, when using containers and operating system virtualization, there are a number of new challenges in many scenarios:

If you have a large number of containers, and they require a lot of virtual machine resources;

If you need to better automate and control the deployment and management of these containers;

How do I create a container platform that can not only run on a Linux server?

How do you deploy a solution in a public cloud or private cloud and anywhere in between, while ensuring operational viability?

In the above scenario, the application container has played a huge role, so let's look at a very specific example. Technology like Docker adds new levels of abstraction and automation to the operating system-level virtualization platform running on Linux. Docker uses cgroups to implement new types of isolation features that allow isolated containers to run on their own Linux instances. When you use a large number of containers that are distributed across multiple different nodes, Docker can help reduce the additional overhead of starting a new virtual machine.

Knowing this, it's important to know that more and more organizations are deploying workloads built on Linux servers. These workloads are running various jobs such as large databases, mining operations, big data engines, and so on. In these Linux cores, container utilization is also increasing, and platforms like Docker can be assisted in the following ways:

Stronger container control. Application containers help abstract virtualization processes at the operating system level, giving administrators greater control over the services provided, as well as better security and process constraints, and even more intelligent resource isolation. Another important aspect is allowing containers across different systems to share resources and control how they are shared.

Create a distributed system. Platforms like Docker allow administrators to manage containers, their tasks, running services, and other processes across distributed, multi-node, and systems. In a large system, Docker has a "source-on-demand" environment that can be obtained immediately when resources are needed for each node. Therefore, you can integrate systems that require large-scale and large amounts of resources, such as MongoDB. In view of this, today's big data platforms span disparate, highly distributed nodes that are located in the private data center of the public cloud or service provider. How do you integrate your container with the cloud?

Cloud integration and cross-integration. Last June, Microsoft Azure started supporting Docker containers on Linux virtual machines. Enables a wide range of Docker Linux application ecosystems to run on the Linux cloud. With more cloud utilization, container systems using Docker can also be integrated with Chief, Puppet, OpenStack, and AWS. Even Red Hat recently announced the incorporation of advanced Linux tools such as Assystemd and SELinux into Docker. All of these tools allow you to extend your container system across your own data center. New features allow you to create your own hybrid cloud container ecosystem to extend your data center, such as AWS.

Docker and other open source projects continue to abstract operating system-level virtualization, allowing for better distributed processing of Linux workloads. Technologies like Docker evolve around container management and automated roads. In fact, Microsoft realizes that many environments use both Linux and Windows Server, so they offer an open solution spanning Windows Server and Linux. If you're using a container-based solution running on a Linux server, take a look at how application containers can help develop your ecosystem.
