Oracle stopped publishing Java 7 security patches and upgrade packages in public channels in April 2015 to urge users to migrate to Java 8 or to purchase long-term business support services for Java 7. Follow-up may be provided by other third party agencies to provide them with public updates.

The planned EOL (End-of-life) was originally announced in March 2014 and is not expected to have an impact on ordinary users (Oracle started Automatic Updates from Java 7 to 8 in January 2015), but Java developers and advanced users may encounter problems 。 Many of the tools and libraries still rely on features that have been marked as obsolete in Java 7, which are completely removed in Java 8, which makes these tools incompatible with the new version of Java, which must be changed before the user upgrades the Java version.

Oracle no longer publishes updates and does not imply that Java 7 is completely useless, but this means that Oracle does not provide patches for any potential pitfalls and vulnerabilities that may be discovered in the future on Java 7, which puts end-users at risk. This means that users who are still using tools that are incompatible with Java 8 either choose to continue using Java 7 and accept potential risks, buy long-term business support, or migrate to another tool. This puts pressure on the tool developers, especially those in the open source project, because they have to combine the daily responsibilities of the project with the work of migrating to the latest version of Java. As FamilySearch's chief engineer and Enunciate's founder, Ryan Heaton is an example, enunciate is a widely used Java document Engine tool that is currently not available on Java 8.

I think the EOL of Java 7 came too fast. I had hoped they would wait a little longer, but I also understood that it was too expensive to maintain the old version of the product and API. But to be honest, I would probably feel too fast no matter when Oracle decides when to terminate Java 7. I have to admit that this has prompted me to update my project as soon as possible.

On the other hand, the only alternative to this migration seems to be unusual, shouldn't the Java 7 be released before the EOL of Java 9 for the user to choose?

Oracle JVM of Alternatives

Although Oracle's JVM is the most popular, it is not the only JVM. Various organizations and user groups have implemented many JVMs, both open source and proprietary, providing different levels of support. For example, Azul Systems, which provides two commercially supported JVMs, not only provides update packages for Java 7, but even Java 6.
