ORACLE differences on UNIX and WINDOWS2000 III

Installation of ORACLE
Oracle8i is installed through the new Java-based Oracle Universal installer and has the same interface on all platforms [1 M Cyran, 1999]. The above sentence is right, but some small differences to be noted. An X-compliant display capability is required on UNIX, or an application like exceed is available on the client's workstation. The installer can be run directly on the Windows2000.

There are many manual tasks in Unix that are not required in Windows 2000. In particular, you do not have to manually set environment variables. You don't have to build a UNIX DBA group that manages the database, you don't have to set up a UNIX to run Oracle Universal installer for users or a user named Oracle to install or upgrade Oracle. Oracle can rejoin in Unix and not in Windows 2000.

In Windows 2000, the user must be a member of the Administrators group to install the database. Automatically creates ora_dba a local group after the Oracle 8i database is installed. Members of this group automatically accept SYSDBA permissions. It is recommended that you choose to install administration Assistant for Windows when customizing the installation to be aware that only one version of this software can be installed per server.

ORACLE 8.1.7 for Solaris is 2CD. Switching to the second CD is not as easy as the manual says. viewing [10
Metalink, 2001] can get concrete content.

Installation instructions on Windows can be seen [3 Kennedy, 2000]. The Oracle Universal Installer Concept Guide is not included in the Oracle8i server online documentation, but is automatically installed on your hard drive during Oracle Universal Installer installation.

Database Management Assistant on Windows
The Oracle Management Assistant on Windows is a GUI tool that runs from the built-in MMC (Microsoft Management Console) in Windows. ORACLE's Windows Management Assistant brings together several common database management tasks into one tool. Allows you to easily create database administrators, operators, users, and roles in Windows. It can also be used to manage startup and shutdown settings for Oracle database services and Oracle databases, edit registry parameter settings, and view Oracle process information.

Automatic tasks
On UNIX, automated tasks like backups are done through cron-run shell scripts. Use scheduling tasks on Windows2000 to run batch files on a regular basis. This schedule is more resilient than the at dispatch command on the previous Windows NT. It allows a task with a user context rather than a system user to run, and it allows permissions to be granted to the task. The batch scripting language is so restrictive that it's worth a good deal of Perl [9 O ' Reilly, 2000]. When a hot backup is run manually in Windows 2000, Oracle provides a command called Ocopy to copy files to another disk location or back to tape. Standard Windows commands (such as copy) do not copy an open file (the data files for the database are all open).

Adjustment and diagnosis
There are very few tools on Windows 2000 to debug the operating system, but we also have to say something that can be done.
The interactive foreground application specifies the default priority during the Windows2000 installation process. To prevent the foreground application from taking up additional processor time, affecting the Oracle8i database and removing its priority, this can be done through the advanced options of the System Control Panel.

In Unix, shared memory and semaphore settings usually need to be changed through/etc/system. Doing this on Windows 2000 is not necessary and is not easy to change.

Oracle Performance Monitor for Windows is a Oracle8i database performance component that is preloaded by Windows 2000 Performance Monitor. If you don't see these things, try this command to change the Performance Monitor settings:

Operfcfg-u system-p manager-d Atei

Windows NT Oracle Performance Monitor allows you to monitor only one instance of a database at a time. The above commands can be toggled between databases. In Windows 2000, ORACLE writes information to the event log like the usual alert and trace files, which can be read by the standard Event Viewer. Dbverify (DBV) in Windows 2000 can be used to check online data files, as well as functions in Unix. In previous windows, DBV only worked on closed databases or backup files.

Summarize
For an Oracle DBA familiar with UNIX, this article describes the major differences Oracle makes on Windows 2000. You can see that Oracle has made a lot of effort to make Oracle as similar as possible on these two platforms, but there is no complete removal of the differences. This article is still worth reading.
