Oracle launches new version of OSS Suite, adapting to open new environment

The operational Support System (OSS) market is facing some significant changes because of the pressure placed on OSS proprietary models by Open software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) technologies, and some of the larger OSS vendors, including Oracle, have begun to take steps to address this change.

The existing OSS is often more traditional and privatized, and it needs to be changed in order to adapt to this open new environment. Last week, Oracle released a new version of OSS suite that was adapted to the virtualized environment. New features include dynamically delivering carrier-grade Ethernet circuitry, directory export capabilities (allowing service information to replicate data and automating creation of services), and improved multi-order processing (for cloud service providers that need to process thousands of orders).

The new Ethernet configuration feature in OSS Suite will help carrier-grade Ethernet move to new heights. These innovations from Oracle are done with MEF, and MEF has developed the Carrier Ethernet 2.0 standard, E-line, and E-lan, and is creating new standards for dynamic bandwidth configurations. MEF calls it a third-generation network, and the service provider or cloud provider wants to be able to tap the button to provide more bandwidth to the enterprise or other large-scale bandwidth providers without requiring a complex set of manual configurations.

Outdated OSS

We surveyed over 60 service providers on the topic "LSO Overview and Market Forecast", which showed that 54.6% of operators thought their OSS system was "obsolete" and needed to be updated or adjusted. 60% of operators say they lack the ability to launch new services quickly and economically.

Oracle's initiatives suggest that SDN/NFV's high-speed development has begun to affect OSS vendors, and vendors have seen the potential to integrate their systems into open standards.
