Many of the features on OS X can be created from Apple's own Automator.app, and you can use this method to create shortcuts for any program.
1. First Step open Automator.app

2. Select New, then select Service

3. Service received selected for no input

Then double-click Run AppleScript in the left sidebar

So the AppleScript is written and saved as Open Terminal
Simply change the "Terminal" in the Tell Application "Terminal" in the script to another program name, and you can set up shortcut keys for other programs.
5. Set shortcut keys

My shortcut is still set to my familiar ALT + Contrl +t in Ubuntu.
