As a key device in the Internet, routers and L3 switches have been widely used. As people have high requirements on the quality of network services, the functions and performance indicators of routers and L3 switches become more and more important. Route tests include consistency tests, interoperability tests, functional tests, and performance tests. The routing protocol simulation is the basis of the routing protocol. Among the many routing protocols, OSPF is the most complex, and the simulation of its routing protocol is also the most complex, this article will introduce how to perform the simulation test of OSPF routing protocol based on the world-famous test instrument Adtech AX/4000. It also helps readers understand the working principle of OSPF and the basic process of route testing.
First, we will configure the router of the tested device for OSPF. The specific configuration of its Router ID = 1.1.1.1 test can be found on the website ). We will use Adtech AX/4000 10/100 M of interface 1 for routing simulation, while interface 2 for traffic generation. See Figure 1 for the specific test topology.

Figure 1

From the test topology, we can see that the two interfaces of Adtech AX/4000 are connected to the Ethernet 0 and Ethernet 1 interfaces of the router respectively. The Adtech AX/4000 interface 1 simulates two routers, both of which are in the 0.0.0.0 region. The vro2.2.2.2.2.2 is directly connected to the tested vro, vro3.3.3.3.3 and vro2.2.2.2.2.2 are connected through a LAN, where vro3.3.3.3.3 is DR (specified vro ). The Network 12.0.0.0/24 is also connected to an interface of vro3.3.3.3.3.

Activate the OSPF simulation function of AX/4000 and add Simulation Node 1. Node 1 configuration: Set OSPF mode to point, node IP address to 10.0.0.2, Router ID to 2.2.2.2, and Area ID to 0.0.0.0. Adtech AX/4000 also allows you to set counters in OSPF and many other parameters such as the router type represented by the specified node. Set Priority to 0 so that the vro will not be a DR or BDR backup router ).

Through the Adtech AX/4000 OSPF simulation, first enter the LSA link status announcement) Setup, add two vrouter IDs = 2.2.2.2 and 3.3.3.3 under the Router entry. For vro2.2.2.2.2.2, you must specify the LSA type as Transit network, which indicates the network with multiple accesses, ID = 11.0.0.2, Data = 11.0.0.1. Here, ID indicates the IP address of DR in the network, and Data indicates the IP address of the interface. For Point-to-point (Point to point) connection and Virtual Link (Virtual Link), ID indicates the Router ID of the neighboring Router, and Data indicates the IP address of the interface; if it is a Stub Network ), ID refers to the IP network, and Data refers to the IP network mask. You can also simulate the vro type, such as the virtual link endpoint, ASBR, and ABR.

Then add the vro connected Network under the Network entry. From the configuration diagram, we can see two multi-channel access networks, with the ls id as the dr ip address, connect to the vrouter ID = 2.2.2.2 and 3.3.3.3 networks, ls id = 11.0.0.2, connect only to the vrouter ID = 3.3.3.3 network, ls id = 12.0.0.1. In this way, a simple OSPF network is generated.

To test whether the router can perform correct IP packet forwarding, configure the test data stream on Adtech AX/4000 Port 2. The attributes of data streams defined on Adtech AX/4000 are rich, and up to 4096 data streams can be defined). Data Stream package length distribution and data packet distribution model can be defined. In this example, set the destination addresses of the test data stream to 11.0.0.1 and 12.0.0.1 respectively, and set the traffic load to 10%, then, the Adtech AX/4000 traffic generation and analysis functions are enabled simultaneously. If the router is correctly forwarded, the test traffic forwarded from the router is displayed on Port 1. Packet Loss, latency, latency distribution, and jitter of each stream can also be tested.

Based on the routing simulation, You can further test the routing performance. Currently, performance testing instruments, such as AX/4000 and SmartBits, provide a graphical ospf lsa generation tool to help testers generate the required OSPF topology. Testers can also generate a large number of Route tables through the large-capacity route table generation Wizard provided.
