Patent Infringement litigation between Apple and HTC is getting more and more interesting. Even Google is unable to sit down and transfer Nine patents that have not yet been hot to its partner HTC. HTC has brought its speed to the extreme. Today, it began to use the Nine patents bought from Google last week (September 1) to initiate an infringement lawsuit against Apple.
In fact, Google only took less than a year to obtain these nine patents. Four are from Motorola, three are from openwave systems, and two are from palm. In September 1, Google quietly transferred the Nine patents to HTC (the specific price is unclear ). Today, HTC has officially filed a lawsuit against Apple in the Delaware federal court, accusing apple of infringing the four Motorola patents it just obtained.
In this HTC counterclaim, the most noteworthy thing is Google's behavior change. In response to Microsoft and Apple's lawsuit against Android hardware partners, it was either language-based condemnation or simply silence. Apparently, Google's approach is to directly support HTC, just like providing arms to a certain party involved in the war. So what causes a major change in Google's behavior? First, Google has acquired Motorola mobile and is directly involved in the hardware market. If Apple and Microsoft are allowed to fight hard against their hardware partners, Motorola mobile's hardware business will also be directly threatened. Second, Google has been cautious with such litigation because they have insufficient patent inventory. With their acquisition of Motorola's numerous mobile patents, google has enough chips to fight back against litigation from Apple and Microsoft. Finally, because Apple and Microsoft have not directly initiated a lawsuit against Google, the most appropriate way for Google to support its partners is to transfer technical patents to them to support them to win the lawsuit.
Obviously, as HTC is one of the main Android supporters, once HTC is defeated by Apple, the serious threat to Android may be a tragedy. Google's patent support is designed to give partners a clear signal that they will never tolerate the failures of their partners and will never tolerate android as a tragedy.
So the next major question is: Google is almost directly involved in the android defending war. Will Apple and Microsoft be directly involved with Google? The war between giants is imminent.
