First, Introduction
Endnote is a tool software for mass document management and batch reference management, and has become a necessary weapon for scientific research since its inception. To write a paper, a large number of references are often complex anomalies, especially when modified, reaching. These problems, endnote can be a self-power, completely solved.

Open Endnote 9.0, which is shown in interface 1.1. The Reference Library window displays the entries for each item in the document, clicking the item name (such as the "Author") button, and all records will be sorted in the order of the entry. The preview window displays simple information about the selected document (the preview format in Figure 1.1 is the default "annotated", and there are other formats in the drop-down menu). The following according to our professional characteristics and needs, combined with my experience of using endnote, introduce the basic operation of the software.

Ii. establishment and editing of the ENL Literature Library
The endnote database, called the Reference Library, is stored in *.ENL format, where the data is stored in a folder with the same name *. In data. The library in this article includes the single-record Libraries "ACEDEMIC.ENL" and the Data folder "Acedemic." Data ".
(1) New ENL
File-->new, or click the first button of the toolbar "new library", you can create a blank library.
(2) Open existing ENL
File-->open-->open Libray, or click the second button of the toolbar "open Library ...", you can open an existing ENL library.
(3) New record
Reference-->new Reference, or right-and "new Reference" in the Reference Library window, you can add new records manually.
(4) Editing records
The Reference Library window can be edited by double-clicking the selected record, or by right-clicking the "Edit References" button.
Edit record Interface 2.1 is shown. Commonly used items include author, year, Title, Journal, Volume, Issue, Pages, Keywords, Abstract, reading notes in note, and if you have a full-text PDF, you can add links to the link To PDF, and link the attachment to the image, and if the digest is downloaded from an online database, the URL can be used to record its provenance. The rest of the items are relatively little used.

1) Author: one row per author, format can be Ziaei, J. E.,ziaei, J E,j E Ziaei, or standard full name, etc. The principle is that the surname is the first, then must be followed by a comma, if you follow the Western name specification, you do not have to add commas. There should be a space after the comma. In the case of Chinese names, it is generally not necessary to add commas to distinguish first and last names. In endnote, in the edit state, the name of the person in red indicates that the first occurrence in the current library, if it appears in the previous record of the name, then Black is indicated.
2) Year,title,journal,volume,issue,pages: These entries are copied from the reference document.
3) Abstract: With author, each keyword column row.
4) Link to PDF, Image: Right-click "Link to PDF", "image" to add. After adding "Image", an attachment flag appears in front of this record in the Reference Library window. EndNote 10.0, you can directly drag and drop the full-text PDF to this field, more convenient, and the link is permanent, not because of the relative path changes and failure, and 9.0 at this point is still not good, so use this version to establish a reference library, you must do a reasonable planning.
(5) Copying records
Copy a record to another library, simply select the target record in the Reference Library window, ^c or right-click "Copy", and then open the ENL file of the target library, ^v or right-click "Paste" to copy it in. The method of shearing is similar to that of ^x/"cut".
(6) Deleting records
In the Reference Library window, select the record you want to delete, and right-click "Delete References". When selected, you can drag multiple records with the mouse, or you can press and hold the Ctrl interval to select them. Pressing the DEL key after direct selection is not valid.



Iii. Bulk Import of literature
Manually editing ENL is a time-consuming effort. One of the most important functions of endnote is to liberate researchers from the heavy work of manual editing of documents. Many online databases provide powerful citation export capabilities. Our major is mainly used in Chinese periodicals network, PubMed, Ovid, Elsevier and other English abstracts/full-text database. Take them as an example to briefly describe the operation of bulk import of literature.
(i) Basic steps
(1) Find the required literature
This step does not need to speak more, belonging to the basic category of literature retrieval.
(2) Select the required documents
In the document to be exported is currently ticked to select the required literature. If the search has been more sophisticated, you can not tick, that is, export by default.
(3) Export citation
1) PubMed (direct connect http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?) db=pubmed): In the results Preview window, the Display drop-down menu selects "MEDLINE", the Show drop-down menu selects an appropriate value to ensure that all the required documents are exported (but only 200 records can be exported at a time), and the drop-down menu next to it can select the default "Send To "or" Text ". The three-step operation is done as quickly as possible, and the Web page automatically refreshes to show the full format of the citation.
2) Ovid (connect online via the school Library Agent): In the panel below the Results Preview window, click "Full" and "Direct Export" to press the OK button.
The endnote automatically runs and jumps out of the Import dialog box. Select Medline (Ovid) in the Filters selection box to import the library that is currently active.
3) Elsevier (also through the school library Agent connection to science Direct): The basic import method and Ovid approach. The key is to choose the correct export format (Medline or Full), and select the correct filter when importing automatically. (Compilation filter is a very skilled knowledge, sometimes need to prepare themselves, this part of the content needs to refer to the relevant manual)
4) China Journal Network: Endnote's Chinese support is weak and does not provide a filter for any Chinese database, which means that the Chinese database will not be imported in bulk unless the filter can be compiled on its own. The filter of the Chinese periodical Net has some folk version, but with the knowledge net revision, similar to hit version that "authoritative" universal version filter has not yet appeared.
(4) Import citation
1) PubMed: page shows the full citation after, copy all, and paste into a notepad file, save. Open endnote, press the "Import ..." button in the third column of the toolbar, jump out of the Import dialog box, open the Save citation Notepad in the "Import data File" box, select "PubMed (NLM)" from the "Import option" drop-down menu. The "Duplicates" drop-down menu allows you to select the default "Import all" or "Discard duplicates" to reject duplicate records in the library.

2) Other: If for version reason, Ovid or Elsevier citation cannot directly import endnote automatically, then like PubMed, export to a text file first, and then import from the text file via filter to Endnote.

(b) Simple steps

Open Endnote,tool-->connect-->connect directly ..., select a target database in the popup dialog, then jump out of the three-column Search window, where you can search for keywords, The result is automatically remitted to the library that is currently active, and the URL bar item displays the link address of each digest in the database.

This method is simple, but does not seem to support proxies in EndNote9.0. The database must be connected directly to the public network and account/password, and the accounts/passwords for most databases are paid for. So in general, only a free database such as PubMed is better suited for this operation.

Iv. Primary modification of the display format
In the preview window, the endnote default annotated format is Citation+abstract mode. In addition, there are author+date, numbered and show all. The information provided by annotated in these formats is comprehensive and streamlined, and is better suited for filtering and previewing. However, there are some drawbacks to this display format, such as the name output format of citation, and the order of the items, which are not quite in line with the general specification of references. can make some changes.

Edit-->output Sytle-->edit "Annotated", open the edit window.
(1) As shown in Citations/author lists,4.1. The general citations show the top three authors, so change the default number. Whether et al Italic display is based on the actual trade-offs. (Note: The text box is filled with a comma followed by a half-width space)

(3) Bibliography/templates. The format of Journal article is generally shown in 4.3. After year is selected, drag to volume before adding a space (space is displayed as a *). Journal can be added after Reference type (such as [J] for journals, etc.), after the cursor is positioned in Journal, press the Insert field button, click "Reference type" to insert. In book format, you can generally move year to the city and embed the edition. The format of the other types of documents is modified according to the needs of the law.

Here, the title before and after the quotation marks, journal under the Underline, the volume is bold, are to highlight. If you want to cancel, select the appropriate bar and press the appropriate font button on the toolbar.
(4) Bibliography/author lists and Author name are modified with citation.
(5) Bibliography/layout:end the reference with text box is the preview display format. The current display format is sufficient, if you need to add keywords or notes, the cursor is fixed after the abstract, press the Insert field button, click end of paragraph, tab and keywords or notes. It is not recommended to do this because the preview is quite messy.
The rest can be changed without change. When you're finished modifying it, click Save Changes.

Changes to display formats other than annotated can be implemented by Edit-->output Style-->open Stylemanager. In general, Amer J epidemol The display format of such magazines are in accordance with the requirements of the magazine citation format, do not need to modify.

V. Export of records
The literature library can be exported as a variety of text documents. First, as described in the previous section, adjust the display format to the desired state, and then press the toolbar Export ... button. In the pop-up dialog box, the Save as Type drop-down menu has txt, rtf, HTM, and XML four formats. Rich Text format can be opened in Word and saved as doc format. If you turn the display format into a magazine, the export is a complete list of citation.

VI. Management of documents
With the use of nested folders, can be a large amount of literature management. Taking the summary as an example, after determining the scope and topic, we can make full use of the function of endnote to collect, organize and read the literature.
(1) Full collection of abstracts
Abstracts found through online databases can be imported into the Endnote literature library, in order to fully collect the information, there are some information may have to be obtained through the library copy, the general amount of information can be entered manually.
My experience is to refine the search terms as much as possible, create a separate ENL library for each search strategy, and place it under the same level folder. Refine the search term to make the records in each ENL library as small as possible, preferably not more than 100.
(2) Screening Abstracts
The records in each ENL library are screened individually through the annotated mode. In most cases, it is possible to sift out a large part of the literature with poor correlation. For the literature to be retained, you may want to keep a note of your impressions or keywords in notes to facilitate further finishing. This step is boring, but it is the foundation of all the work behind it.
(3) Merging records
After sifting through several libraries that are similar to the search strategy, you can combine them into a single library. In this step, it is recommended to use the Edit-->find Duplicates menu screen to repeat the record. In this way, a secondary library can be formed. With this approach, merging in the secondary library allows you to obtain one or more final libraries.
When the final library is formed, the structure of the review needs to be planned. These plans are reflected in notes. Some documents are used in the Background section, notes can be labeled "Backgroud", some may be used in the Outlook section, notes can be labeled "View" and so on. By Reference-->search references operation, in "Notes" Search "Certain Keywords", they can be displayed separately and grouped into different target libraries.
(4) Collect the full text
The literature in the final library is what is needed. Next, try to get the full text of them, and press the link to PDF and image as described in Section two (4). In the future to write a paper need to refer to the full text, right-click Open PDF, very convenient.

Vii. references in Word
When the literature library is complete, it is necessary to start writing papers. One of the most outstanding advantages of endnote is the freedom to insert and adjust the citation. This is very useful in the paper writing of large document volume.
After you install endnote, the endnote plugin is generated in Word accordingly. It has options on both the toolbar (7.1) and the Tools menu. Suppose we want to insert the document {ziaei,2004}, as shown in the first section, in the paper, then proceed as follows:

(1) Move the cursor to the insertion position.
(2) tool-->endnote 9-->go to EndNote or EndNote toolbar A second button opens EndNote.
(3) In the Library window of EndNote, select the record to insert, come to Word, menu/tool-->endnote 9-->insert Selected Citation, or EndNote toolbar The fourth button in the first column, The record is remitted into the word insertion point.
(4) If the citation display format is not correct, then through the tool-->endnote 9-->format bibliograhpy or EndNote toolbar The first column of the third button, enter the Format selection dialog box, 7.2.

There is an alternative bibliography Style in the WITH Output drop-down menu, if there is no desired, click the Browse button, pop up all the Bibliograhpy list, select an item and make sure that all citation will be batched into this display format. 7.3 is shown

(5) To move a reference, you only need the cursor to select the text citation, drag and drop to a new position, the end of the reference and the serial number will automatically change.
(6) Delete a reference, and the normal text operation is exactly the same, the end reference and serial numbers are also automatically updated.
(7) The note inserted in some papers can be inserted through the tool-->endnote 9-->insert Note or the second button of the EndNote toolbar. These inserted note will also appear in the end of the text reference.
(8) After the completion of the paper, confirm that all references are correct, through the tool-->endnote 9-->remove field codes or EndNote toolbar, the second column of the fifth button, all the citation formatting macros removed and saved as a doc document, Then the corresponding format decoration, you can complete the reference editing.

Viii. Import and export of Chinese literature
Endnote's Chinese support function is weak, such as our common Chinese periodical Network, Wanfang database and Whipple information online resources are missing the corresponding filter and style files. With the increase of endnote Chinese users, many people began to create corresponding filter and style for these databases to support the import and export of Chinese abstracts. These work provides the technical foundation for the Chinese literature management of endnote. In these work, the CvtCNKI.exe conversion software developed by Harbin Institute of Technology can support the conversion of Chinese periodical Network, Wanfang data Base, Whipple Information Network even the super-star library and endnote libraries. Therefore, the following will be based on the CvtCNKI.exe conversion plug-in, respectively, the Chinese periodical Network, Wanfang data base and Whipple Information network as an example, how to import Chinese literature into the EndNote.

(a) Chinese periodical network
Open the Chinese Knowledge Network (CNKI) search interface, type search terms or compound search, search for results, tick the favorite digest, on the search results page of the navigation bar click on the "Save" button. Output format in the pop-up menu select Custom, click All options in the Customize Comp box, and then tap Preview. In the Preview window, select the full output, copy to a text document (such as a CNKI.txt file), and save.
Open CvtCNKI.exe (currently developed to version V2.0.2.B2), click the "File" button, choose to save the exported results of the text document, the "Options" frame "document type" corresponding to select "Journal article" or "dissertation", "Output format" select "EndNote". Click the "Convert" button to generate a Enw file with the same name. Click "View conversion Results", that is, automatically start endnote, in the Pop-up dialog box to choose an existing ENL file, or create a new ENL library file, Cvtcnki can automatically import the contents of the converted Enw file into the Open ENL Library.

(b) Wanfang Data base
Take the academic dissertation library as an example. Open the Wanfang search interface, type a search term or compound search, search for results, click "Detailed summary information" after the Favorite digest. On the detailed summary information page that opens, on the top there is the "Output mode" drop-down menu, select "Verbose output format. txt", the pop-up menu asks "whether to save", click OK, save as a text document. Note: If garbled, save the text document once, the saved format changed from "UTF-8" to "ANSI". If it still appears garbled or does not import correctly, change all "" in the text document to enter.
The next step is to import with Cvtcnki (1).

(c) Whipple Information Network (Chinese sci-tech periodical database)
Open the search page of the general information, type the search words or compound search results, after searching the result, tick the Favorites digest, click "Print" on the navigation bar, select "Full record display" in the Pop-up dialog box. Copy all the records displayed in the new page to a text document.
Next, import with Cvtcnki, step with (1).

The new version of Cvtcnki can convert the results of many Chinese databases, and the different format files of endnote, RIS and other document management tools can be converted to each other. Although this tool still has such a bug, the author's update speed is still basic to ensure that its conversion efficiency. With this tool, endnote's Chinese support capabilities can be greatly enhanced.



If you want to achieve endnote and Revman literature sharing, you need to install Revman in the endnote style and filters of the appropriate plug-in. EndNote Xi has installed the appropriate plug-in, you can also add their own.
