Tutorial Material: Retro style character portrait

1. Select material

First open the picture in Photoshop, click "File > Open", then select the downloaded picture, click OK. You need to check the picture before continuing with the following actions:

(1) The picture should use the 8-bit RGB color mode. Click the "Image > mode" check.

(2) The size of the picture will affect the end-use effect, the picture high width is best set in 1500~4000 pixels. Click on the "Image > Image size" check.

2. Dig out the characters

Step 1

When you open the picture, pull the portrait out. Common portrait cutout tools are: Pen tool (P), lasso tool (L), Quick Selection Tool (W), Magic Wand Tool (W). According to the different use habits can choose to use, the author of this tutorial is a magic wand tool, as long as the set good tolerance, you can start setting selection. Use SHIFT, alt to increase or reduce the selection, the setting process can also adjust the tolerance, so that the choice of more accurate.

If the background content is simple (as this example), create a selection for the background and choose Select > Invert to select to portrait.

Step 2

When you create a selection, select Layer > New layer > Create by Copy to copy the image from the selection and create a new layer so that you can get the detached portrait. Double-click the thumbnail to rename to portrait.

3. Create a background

Step 1

Select the background layer, select Layer > New fill layer > Solid color, and create a solid-color fill layer. Named "Background Color", click OK. This will pop up the window to choose the color, select the Black #000000, click OK.

Repeat the previous steps to create a new layer named "Halo". Right-click the light layer, select the blending option, and tick the gradient overlay, as shown below.

Reduce the opacity of the light layer to 25%.

4. Create a light source

Step 1

Now create the image light source, select Image > New fill layer > Gradient, and create a new gradient fill layer. Named "Light Source", click OK. This will pop up the dialog box, press the picture set, click OK.

The design light shines on the character, so it doesn't go directly to the bottom of the image, so it needs to be obscured by the light in the second half. The layer mask is used here. Select the light layer, press D or X to set the foreground color to black, and select Edit > Fill. Apply the following settings and click OK.

Select the layer mask, click the Lasso Tool, right-click the canvas, and select Free transform. The following figure adjusts the masking range to the bottom half of the canvas and is determined by carriage return.
