Photoshop Fill Tool Tutorial

A fill is the processing of a selected area with a specified color or pattern, and there are four common methods: Delete, Paint bucket, fill, and gradient.

　　(1) Delete tool

Use the DELETE key "Del" to perform basic padding operations on the selected area, as follows:

• Select the area you want to fill.

• Press the "Del" key to fill with the background color and press the "Alt+del" key to fill with the foreground color.

　　(2) Paint bucket tool

The paint bucket (that is, the paint bucket) tool is used to fill the foreground color or the specified pattern to the outside of the mouse click and its color area, and to further set the fill synthesis, opacity, color tolerance, and padding with the Paint Bucket tool options panel. The specific steps are as follows:

Select the Paint Bucket tool in the tool tray.

• If you use a foreground color fill, select the foreground color, or set the pattern if you use the specified pattern fill.

• If necessary, double-click the Paint Bucket tool, open the Options panel, and make tool options settings as shown in the figure.

　　(3) Fill command

Use the fill command to make a unique image effect by filling it by the user's selected color or custom image.

• Custom pattern

The custom pattern itself does not produce any effect on the screen, and its role is to place the custom pattern in the system memory for the fill operation. Action steps are as follows:

Select the rectangular box tool in the tool tray, and make sure the feather setting in the Tools Options panel is set to 0, then select the image area you want to use as the pattern in the image, and then select the Define Pattern command under the Edit menu bar to complete the custom pattern operation.

• Use the Fill command

　　Action steps are as follows:

First select the Fill command under the Edit menu bar to open the Fill dialog box, as shown in Figure 4-33. Then select a fill in the Fill Content Drop-down list and click OK.

Use the custom pattern fill method to produce the image effect as shown in the illustration.

　　Action steps are as follows:

• Open image file.

• Select the Rectangular tool Box tool on the tool tray and select a balloon shape in the current image.

• Customize the selected graphic to a pattern by selecting the Define Pattern command under the Edit menu bar.

• Select the deselect command under the Select Menu bar to cancel the selection above.

• Select the Fill command under the Edit menu bar, open the Fill dialog box, select pattern in the Use list, enter 100% in the Opacity box, select Normal in the mode list, and then click OK to get an effect as shown in the illustration.

　　(4) Gradient tool

Using the Gradient tool in the tool tray, you can produce a gradient effect of more than two colors. The gradient method can either select system settings or define them yourself. The gradient direction of cable characters, circular radial, square radial, angular and oblique, and so on. If you do not select a range, the entire image is filled with a gradient.

The steps to use the gradient tool are as follows:

Press the ALT key while you click the Gradient tool in the tool tray to select a gradient orientation.

• Select the foreground and background colors you want for the gradient.

• Select the gradient area as needed.

• If necessary, double-click the Gradient tool, open the gradient Tools Options panel, and set the gradient options as shown in the previous illustration.

• Click and drag the mouse to draw a line in the selection area of the image window to produce a gradient effect.
