In this Photoshop tutorial I will show you how to create a wood mosaic effect using wood textures, layer masks, and some creative selection techniques.
Effect chart
Step 1
First let's build a new document, and mine is 540x300 pixel, 72ppi. Size is not important. On the internet can find a lot of good wood texture, I use the texture on the defcon–x.de. We will first create 3 layers and paste each wood texture separately. Color is not important, the important thing is the tone of the wood, for this I chose a light, moderate, deep a few pieces. In the layer I put the most light on the bottom, the dark at the top (Figure 01), because I want to use the most light texture as the background of the image.
01
Textures on defcon-x are have a high resolution, and you may want to use the free transform function to resize them to fit your work.
Step 2
Next, we need to select a font. In order to achieve the effect I want, the font I use is Bifurk and can be downloaded free of charge in dafont.com.
Select the top layer of the wood texture and use the type tool to enter the text you want to add (Figure 02).
02
Step 3
Now let's add some layer masks to define the text texture layer. Press command/ctrl+ to load this selection by clicking a thumbnail of the text layer in the Layers panel (Figure 03).
03
Step 4
With the text layer selected, select the light wood on the layers panel as the working layer, and then press the Add Layer Mask button to convert the selection to the layer mask (Figure 04).
04
Step 5
Then select the dark, load the selection, and add a layer mask on the dark (Figure 05).
05
Step 6
At this point we finished creating the text, but for security you can not delete it, click on the text layer thumbnail to the left of the eye icon to close the text layer (Figure 06).
06
Step 7
Make sure that the top wood texture layer is selected as the active layer, and then click on the layer mask on the layer to make sure that the elements we want to do are applied to the layer mask, not the layer itself. When a layer mask is selected, there will be parentheses around it on the layer mask thumbnail.
What we're going to do here is to select the area on the layer mask and make it "black" so that the bottom layer is displayed. Use the Rectangle Marquee tool to create a selection around one of the letters (figure 07).
