To install Pidgin 2.7.1 on Ubuntu, run the following command:

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: pidgin-developers/ppa & sudo apt-get update

Sudo apt-get install pidgin

Currently, the above Pidgin PPA is only updated for Pidgin2.7.1 on Ubuntu 10.04, but other Ubuntu versions will soon get the latest Pidgin version.
