this August, a large number of game developers walked into Unite 2014 and gathered at the Seattle Center to attend the Unite eighth annual meeting. In a series of exciting meetings and keynote speeches, Jens Fursund, from our PowerVR Ray tracing team, introduced the upcoming Unity 5 Light mapping editor, which uses ray-tracing technology to quickly and accurately simulate light.
We are very pleased to work with unity, and in recent shows and events, we have received a lot of positive feedback from some of the developers who watched the tool demonstrate.
Let's take a quick look at how PowerVR ray tracing technology enables developers and artists to accelerate work development with the new lighting map editor.
Unity 5 Light Map Editor Preview
in the following, you can see how the Unity 5 editor re-renders the light map when the user changes any light source. The tool is fully interactive and provides artists and developers with instant viewing of the final game's lighting effects.
The engine that drives the lighting map creation is our PowerVR Ray-tracing technology. The Unity5 editor uses ray tracing techniques to track the rays emitted by each light element position when mapped to a 3D scene. The light then intersects with other objects, disperses from them, and simulates the various paths of all light walks. Over time, the rendering effect is progressively improved until the final high-quality light map is rendered.

The above sequence shows that the illumination map is being gradually perfected
you are free to make any changes that affect the illumination map, such as changing the lighting or geometry, and the editor redraws the light map as needed. In our example, you can see that we move objects around and adjust different material properties. For example, when a red luminescent material is used on a given object, you can increase the color concentration to get a dramatic glow effect. However, this rebound light effect is not only seen on luminescent materials.

Red luminescent material produces luminous effect
when a highly saturated diffuse material (such as a green wall) is used, the light hits its surface and bounces to other walls. These two examples are very noticeable in static lighting views.

use of luminescent material when switching to static lighting view more obvious
You can also modify the relevant environment variables, for example, by removing the sky box to make the shadows more coarse, while the bouncing light is no longer cleaned by the sky box.
in, we also give a texture view, in which the textures have been blended and overlaid with the light map, while also showing the static lighting view, you can see the pure light map. Static lighting views are useful because you can get shadows and lighting effects in your scene without worrying about the effects of different objects ' textures. In addition, you can open a two-dimensional expanded light preview in a small window that can be placed in the corner of the main editor.

you can see the overlay effect of the texture blending on the light map or switch to the static lighting view
