Article Title: Practical ASUSP4PE-X onboard sound card AC97. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
From computer access to the present, Windows operating system has been used, in which the installation of sound card driver is very simple, basically all the way to click Next to solve. This is not the case in Linux. If you use an old-style sound card, you may be able to listen to beautiful music without even installing the sound card driver, but now most people use a new sound card. For example, if the kernel is ac'97, they have to face the problem of installing the sound card driver because they live in a silent world, it is really a huge torment to the soul, so many people will not hesitate to fight for it. The author has gone through such a difficult journey from the silent world to the sound world. The following describes the actual process of sound card.

I am using Red Hat Linux 9.0 and the sound card is the ASUS P4PE-X onboard ac'97. Before installation, you have to prepare the sound card driver package-ALSA, which can be downloaded to the latest software package at the FTP site to which the http://www.alsa-project.org belongs, which can drive sound card devices under Linux, and support most popular sound cards, the most important thing is that it is free. I have selected alsa-driver-1.0.7.tar.tar, alsa-lib-1.0.7.tar.tar, and alsa-utils-1.0.7.tar.tar.

To ensure smooth installation, you must log on with the root user. The installation procedure is as follows:

1. Check that the system has installed the kernel source code and gcc and other development tools.

2. decompress the package. First put the three software package in/tmpfolder, then the expansion of the three software package name system to .tar.bz2, right click, select "extract here", this generates a alsa-driver-1.0.7, alsa-lib-1.0.7, alsa-utils-1.0.7 three folders.

Iii. installation. Run the following command to create a terminal:

# Cd/tmp
# Cd alsa-driver-1.0.7
#./Configure
# Make
# Make install
#./Snddevices

# Cd ..
# Cd alsa-lib-1.0.7
#./Configure
# Make
# Make install

# Cd ..
# Cd alsa-utils-1.0.7
#./Configure
# Make
# Make install
# Alsaconf
# Reboot

Restart the system and choose "Main Menu"> "sound" and "video"> "volume controller". Set it in and enable the audio player. Then you can hear beautiful music.

However, there is another drawback: as long as you restart the system, the volume will be minimized. To hear the sound, you must reset the volume controller. Although it is not too troublesome, it always feels a little uncomfortable. How can we avoid making special changes after setting the volume? To create a terminal, run the following command: ls/etc/rc. d/init. d, which contains the "alsasound" string, which is related to the sound card and also what we need. Continue command: chkconfig? Level 2345 alsasound on, this sentence does not show any changes, so you need to verify it and lay down: chkconfig? List alsasound, and click Enter. Now everything has been completed successfully. You can also directly listen to music after restarting the system, without changing the volume.

Webmin management tools can also be used for the same purpose: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin, which is a powerful and user-friendly management tool. After the installation is complete, go to the management System, select the System directory page, click Bootup and Shutdown, find alsasound, and change its "Start at boot" to "Yes" to achieve the same purpose. I will not go into detail here. If you are interested, you can try it yourself.

When the long-lasting music sounds again, the excitement will only be realized by yourself. At this time, your confidence in learning Linux will inevitably increase further, and I have gone through this moment, unforgettable. Good luck!
