Windows 7 is pre-installed in the notebook. after July, Windows 7 is pre-installed in Microsoft and can be upgraded to the Win8 Professional Edition through the official version of Windows 15.53. Directly upgrade to Win8. Microsoft's Win8 update assistant can launch a USB flash drive. Saving yourself the trouble of creating a Windows boot disk.
Because it is an EFI + GPT solution, you need to format all the disks, and the Dell will not be able to recover all of these features.
- Enter the BIOS settings of the notebook (the BIOS is already simulated by EFI) and change the startup mode to EFI.
- Insert the Win8 boot USB flash drive and choose to start it from the USB flash drive at startup.
- Windows 8 will prompt you to format the hard disk into GPT to support EFI, delete all the original partitions, create a partition of more than 15 GB, the installer will automatically add two partitions, in this way, MSR (Microsoft system backup) is m, ESP (EFI system partition) is m, and Windows system partition is G. Leave the remaining space empty for Linux
- Select a Windows system partition for installation. The Windows Installer automatically bootmgfw the Windows boot program under the ESP partition. when EFI is added to EFI, we keep it to prevent grub from urgently standby when Windows cannot be started. The installation and configuration of windwos are complete.
- Use archlinux to start the USB flash drive and use parted or cgdisk to partition the remaining space. I divided three zones, one/home, one/, and one/swap. The ESP partition directly uses the Windows Installer partition.
- Follow the steps to install grub-install. Note that you need to mount the ESP partition to/boot/EFI. Otherwise, it will be directly installed to the/boot/GRUB/directory, then you can manually copy the EFI file to this directory. The EFI file searches for grub-related configurations based on the parameters during installation.
- In this way, grub boot may not be added to the EFI boot option. You can manually add it in BIOS settings.
- Add Windows 8 boot to grub. Set GRUB boot to the default startup Item.
Precautions for grub Installation
- The best way to use the root path of grub is to use UUID, because some computers will occupy the ID number of the external device to the front.
