Prepare Active Directory and domain

Before installing Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 on any Server in the organization, you must prepare Active Directory and domain. This topic describes how to prepare Active Directory and domain for Exchange 2010.

For information about preparing a domain with the old Exchange permission, see prepare the old Exchange 2003 permission.

Prerequisites

• The computer on which Exchange 2010 is to be installed must meet the system requirements. For more information, see system requirements for Exchange 2010.
• The domain and domain controller must comply with the system requirements described in the network and Directory Services Section in Exchange 2010 system requirements.
• In each domain where Exchange 2010 is installed, you must have at least one domain controller running any of the following software: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later version of 32-bit or 64-bit) windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 or later 32-bit or 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise Edition32-bit or 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise Edition
• If you want to run the official release (RTM) version of Exchange 2010 Setup.com in each domain that has an Exchange Enterprise Server and an Exchange Domain Server Security Group, you must also runSetup/PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions), You must have at least one domain controller running any of the following software: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1 or a later version of 32-bit or 64-bit) windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 or later 32-bit or 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition 32-bit or 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise Edition
• If you run the Exchange 2010 Installation Wizard using an account Schema Admins, Domain Admins, and Enterprise Admins that has the required permissions to prepare Active Directory and Domain, the wizard automatically prepares Active Directory and Domain. However, if you want to deploy a new Exchange organization and use a computer running Active Directory to prepare the Windows Server 2008 architecture and domain, you must install the Windows Server 2008 management tool on the Active Directory computer before preparing the architecture or domain. To do this, run the following command.

  ServerManagerCmd -i RSAT-ADDS

   

Prepare Active Directory and domain

To track the progress of Active Directory replication, you can use the Active Directory replication monitoring tool (replmon.exe), which is installed as part of Windows Server 2003 support tool installation. By default, it is located at "% programfiles % \ support tools \". Add the domain controller as the monitored server to track the replication progress across the domain.
