If you cannot enable the local computer after a power failure or for other reasons, do you want to achieve Remote Boot?

At present, the new generation of mainboards on the market all provide functions such as keyboard or mouse boot, modem wake-up boot, and network wake-up boot. For Network wake-up boot, special hardware and software support is required, some materials are rarely compared and introduced. As a result, some users do not know how to enable the network to wake up when hardware support is available. This article describes in detail how to wake up and start the network.

How to enable Network wake-up

If you want to wake up a specified computer through the network, you must first know the ID number that can identify the computer. Because the wake-up computer is shut down, there is no IP address or computer name. The only physical address that can identify it is the internal Nic, that is, the MAC address, which is unique, the MAC addresses of each network adapter are different.

When the user knows the MAC address of the computer to be awakened, the user executes the corresponding software through another computer to send a special packet containing the address to the network. At this time, although the computer is shut down, the internal Nic control chip can still receive and process packets on the network through the current sent by a dedicated connection. Therefore, by checking the MAC address in the data packet, the control chip can identify itself as the receiver of the data packet, and then send a boot signal through a dedicated connection to notify the motherboard to start the boot.

Hardware requirements

The Application Network wake-up function must have corresponding hardware support before it can be used.

First, you must have motherboard support. Nowadays, most of the new-generation mainboards support the Network wake-up function, and there is a three-pin socket on the mainboard. It is generally located near the PCI slot and marked with "Wol" next to it ".

Second, you must have Nic support. This type of NIC has a three-pin socket more than the general Nic on the motherboard, and usually comes with a dedicated three-core connection line, which is used to connect the Three-pin socket between the motherboard and the NIC.

At last, the ATX power supply must be used, and the + 5 V standby current must be large. According to Intel's suggestion, it must be above 600mA. The current size can be found in the + 5vsb column of the external power supply identifier.

It should be noted that some boards have integrated network adapters with the wake-up function, so there is no three-pin socket, and no dedicated three-core connection is required.

Software requirements

To wake up a computer on the network, you must send a data packet in a different format than a common data packet. In addition, you must use the corresponding special software to generate the data packet. At present, magic packet developed by AMD is widely used. This software can generate special packets needed for network wake-up. The data package contains 6 consecutive bytes of "FF" and 16 consecutive MAC addresses. Although magic packet is only a technology developed and promoted by AMD, it is not an industry-recognized standard, but it is still supported by many Nic manufacturers. Therefore, many NICs with the network wake-up function can be compatible with it.

Summary:

1. motherboard support required

2. Nic support required

3. The CMOS settings are correct.

4. Software cooperation
