Problems arising from copying virtual machine files of mobile vmware workstation: Similarities and Differences between I moved it and I copied it-problems arising from copying virtual machine files of mobile VMware Workstation
When we copy a virtual machine system or move it to another new location, the following prompt appears when starting the virtual machine:
This virtual machine may have been moved or copied.
In order to configure certain management and networking features vmware workstation needs to know which.
Did you move this virtual machine, or did you copy it?
If you don't know, answer "I copied it ".
Why does this problem occur? We also need to talk about UUID (UUID refers to the number generated on a machine, which ensures that all machines in the same time and space are unique. Generally, the platform provides the uuid generation API). The virtual machine also has a uuid, and this UUID is unique.
The UUID of a VM is generally related to the location of the VM configuration file and the physical host. When we move a virtual machine system, we do not need to create a uuid. When copying a virtual machine, we should create a new UUID to ensure the uniqueness of the virtual machine.
When we try to copy or move a virtual machine in datastore, the system will prompt us:
A. I _ moved it;
B. I _ copied it;
At the same time, we can see the following message:
"Msg. uid. Altered: this virtual machine may have been moved or copied", what does it mean ??
First, we should know what UUID is mentioned in the above message?
The full name of UUID is: universally unique identifier. UUID is a 128-bit value used to differentiate the differences between each virtual machine.
UUID is automatically generated when the VM is enabled or moved. The Udi value is based on the physical host and saved in the *. vmx file. The UUID value is stored in two locations of the vmx file:
A. UUID. BIOS;
B. UUID. Location (this is the current path of the VM );
For example, UUID. BIOS = "56 4D 5E 58 66 F5 2D 04-03 31 0a BD 6f A7 19 88"
UUID is also stored in the BIOS of the virtual machine. When a virtual machine is enabled or moved, the uuid's UUID. Location value changes accordingly as the storage location of the virtual machine changes. Once the location of the virtual machine changes, the UUID. Location value will also change accordingly. At this time, the information we first described will be prompted.
Why is UUID so important? What will happen if the uuid is the same? In fact, the most critical one is that the last few digits of UUID are related to the MAC address of the Virtual Machine. If no change is made, the uuid may be the same when we clone the virtual machine, if the MAC address is conflicted, the network may be faulty.
So should we choose "I moved it" or "I copied it? In fact, we can compare the content in the vmx file by executing the following commands:
I moved it:
Because the virtual machine is moved, only UUID. Location changes, and the MAC address does not change.
I copied it:
Because it is a copy virtual machine, the UUID. bios and UUID. Location will change, which will change the MAC address.
