What is 3D luts?

The so-called Lut, in fact, is the abbreviation of lookup table. The 3D LUTs, which is the three-dimensional lut, has an RGB channel in each coordinate direction, which allows us to map and process all color information. Whether the existence or the absence of color, or even some of the film can not reach the gamut, are able to map out.

We can create 3D LUTs according to our own requirements, and can adjust the color of pictures and videos through 3D LUTs in Photoshop, Premiere Pro and after effects. The 3D Luts is widely used in the film production industry and is the color palette concept of film level.

Commonly used steps:

1, the original image;

2, use the adjustment layer to create color effects;

3, export 3D lut documents;

4. Replace the adjustment layer with 3D lut in Photoshop or other software.

Using 3D LUTs

In Photoshop, we can use the Color Lookup feature (Layer > New adjustment layer > Color Lookup) through the Adjust layer, and view or load your own 3D Luts file from the Drop-down menu.

Create your own 3D LUTs

In Photoshop CC 2014, we can create our own 3D LUTs with any adjustment layer. This is not a difficult process to adjust the picture color effects (Layers > New adjustment layers) using any of the adjustment layers in the adjustment layer panel. The following figure for example, the author through a variety of adjustment layers for the image to create a retro effect.

One thing to note here is that, as a professional, you choose which color mode to use for the image is also very important in the color adjustment process (Image > Mode menu).

1. If you are creating a color effect in Lab color mode, your exported color lookup table can only be the best compatibility format for. Because can be used in any color mode (RGB, CMYK, and so on).

2, if you are in RGB color mode to create color effects, then you export the color lookup table can only be used as a 3D LUTs, and RGB device link format.

3. If you are creating color effects in CMYK color mode, you can export as an CMYK device link setting.

Next, export your 3D LUTs, file > Export > Color lookup table.

Here, add an introduction to your color lookup table. You can also type the relevant information in the Copyright field (Photoshop automatically adds the copyright?< the current year >) at the end. Quality settings, the general adjustment grid values, the larger the number, the file size will be larger. You can also choose to export the color lookup table as a 3D LUTs, cube, or CSP file. However, the cube and CSP formats are not compatible with the after Effects CS5 or earlier version. In addition, you can also select the file settings, if necessary.

Once you have saved your 3D LUTs, you can use it in Photoshop (Layer > New adjustment layer > Color lookup). In Premiere Pro and Speedgrade, the Lumetri is used to adjust the layer.
