Python October 1 was officially released in 2.6. This is a transitional version. Developers are expected to release the latest Python 3.0 this month.

Despite this, Python 2.6 still contains some new features and syntaxes from 3.0. It is compatible with existing code and adds compatibility functions to the future_builtins module, added the multiprocessing and json modules in the standard library.
