Like other Web development languages, ColdFusion has been enthusiastically sought after. Because Eclipse is a popular open source development framework, it is only a matter of time before ColdFusion Plug-ins stand out. Learn how to install and use the plug-in to develop, test, and deploy the sample ColdFusion application.
Previously, ColdFusion developers used Macromedia HomeSite to write code, most recently using Dreamweaver. Unfortunately, HomeSite has not been updated for years, and Dreamweaver also strives to be a code-centric IDE and designer tool. A new ColdFusion IDE was introduced in the form of an Eclipse plug-in in 2004, originally called the Basic ColdFusion Eclipse plug-in, and renamed to Cfeclipse.
Now there is a large community that supports cfeclipse. Many developers are involved in the open source project, and recently, Adobe Systems has also released ColdFusion-related additional extensions and Help files for ColdFusion V8 to support Cfeclipse on the back end of the Eclipse platform.
This article explores the functionality of Cfeclipse by developing, debugging, and deploying a simple Art Gallery application with a sample database that comes with ColdFusion V8. This article assumes that you have installed the following software (see Resources).
