RedHat, the world's leading open-source solution provider, recently announced the release of the 5.0 test version of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack platform. This product combines the strength of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenStack technologies, it aims to provide a scalable and secure foundation for building an open private or public cloud. The combination of these two powerful technologies can help users in the early deployment phase of OpenStack, or who need to migrate resources to an open hybrid cloud environment through the Red Hat cloud infrastructure solution.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack platform 5.0 test version includes the rapidly developing open-source cloud software platform OpenStack Icehouse and the latest Red Hat flagship operating system-Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 test version, it marks the continuous investment of RedHat in enterprise OpenStack products. At the same time, the second version of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack platform 5.0, which supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, will be launched soon. Red Hat will maintain these two versions within a period of time to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 7, so that customers can choose to provide the best version for their current operating system.

This beta version includes significant improvements to computing, storage, and network capabilities, enabling users to gain a comprehensive OpenStack experience based on the security and scalability of Redhat Enterprise Linux. In addition, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack platform version 5.0 provides important installation and configuration enhancement features to help simplify OpenStack deployment for new users. This version contains hundreds of updates and new features. Key updates include the following:

  Computing progress

The new computing API is enhanced to facilitate the use of virtual machines. This provides Association and anti-association policies to determine how virtual machines can be called Based on hosts in a group. These new policies ensure that specific application tasks are combined or called on the same host to ensure optimal performance without overload, and fault tolerance when necessary.

  Increase Cinder storage capability

The new OpenStack Block Storage (Cinder) backup API features the ability to export and import backup service metadata. Although the API already has the ability to back up data, Icehouse introduces the ability to include Cinder database metadata, which is crucial for disaster recovery.

  Enhanced network plug-in

The new modular Layer 2 (ML2) Plug-in for OpenStack Networking (Neutron) in this version now makes it easy to add a new layer 2 network technology, and continue to provide support for existing plug-ins, including Open vSwitch. The new ML2 plug-in also enables single I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) PCI pass-through, improving network performance by bypassing the software switching layer. This is important for customers who use hybrid plug-ins in heterogeneous network environments.

In addition, this version provides the OpenDaylight driver for the ML2 plug-in, allowing Neutron and OpenDaylight to communicate with each other, thus providing a solid foundation for network function Virtualization (NFV) technology.

New Enhanced installation and configuration features simplify enterprise OpenStack deployment

The complete GA version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack platform 5 will also introduce improved and robust OpenStack installation programs for users who migrate to OpenStack. The new installer is expected to appear in future RHEL-OSP 5.0 GA and will integrate a plug-in for Foreman. The Foreman open-source project enables system administrators to easily and automatically complete repetitive tasks, quickly deploy applications, and actively manage servers, both locally and in the cloud. This new installer greatly simplifies initial OpenStack deployment and ensures the sound development of the complete OpenStack infrastructure. Features will include a simple step-by-step graphical user interface (GUI) that guides you through the deployment process and reduces installation complexity.
