Red Hat releases an enterprise-level Linux operating system test

[CCID news] Open Source codeSoftware Vendor Red Hat announced on Monday a beta version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 codenamed nahant.

This is the first public beta version of Red Hat's next-generation enterprise-level Linux operating system. It is also the first RHEL Based on Linux 2.6 kernel. RHEL 4 beta is a rehearsal of Red Hat's next-generation enterprise-level desktop and server operating systems.

According to Red Hat spokesman Lee, Red Hat expects the official version of RHEL 4 to be released in early 2005.

RHEL 4 beta contains upgraded versions of many major system components. 2.6.8 is the basis of Linux kernel, while gnome 2.8 is the basis of its user interface. For office users, RHEL 4 beta integrates OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 office software, evolution 1.5.94 email client, and Mozilla 1.7.2, Firefox 0.9.3, and Epiphany 1.3.8 browsers.

For developers, it integrates GCC 3.4.1 and GNU libc 2.3.3. Red Hat will track defects in RHEL 4 beta through its Bugzilla system.

RHEL 4 beta supports most red hat hardware platforms, including 32-bit X86 architecture, 64-bit amd64, em64t, and ANT2. It also supports IBM's 64-bit eserver iseries, pseries, power, and IBM's ibm s/390 and eserver zseries large hosts.
