Red Hat, a Linux vendor, has opened up the SPICE (Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment) virtual desktop Protocol to accelerate the application of this technology. SPICE obtained virtual technology after Red Hat acquired Qumranet last year and was used by Qumranet in its commercial virtual desktop product SolidIce. SPICE can be used to deploy virtual desktops on servers and remote computers, such as desktop and thin client devices. It is similar to other rendering protocols used for Remote Desktop management, such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol or Citrix's Independent Computing Architecture. It supports Virtual Machine instances such as Windows XP, Windows 7, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Most SPICE code is published using the GNU GPLv2 license, and some code uses the LGPL license.
