Remote login from diskless workstation on NT Network

Remote Boot service is a feature of Windows NT Server that enables remote workstation to start MS-DOS and Windows using software on the Server hard disk. Using the remote start service can increase network security and provide more control to network system administrators. It has the advantages of centralized software upgrade and reduced the cost of purchasing and maintaining workstation. Currently, the NT network does not contain remote start configuration documents for general NICs that do not exist in the template configuration file. You are very concerned about how to solve its configuration problems.
The following uses Chinese NT Server 4.0 as an example to describe how to remotely start and install a workstation using a general NIC (diskless) in the NT Network for your reference. Hotspot Network

1. Add the DLC Communication Protocol and NetBEUI communication protocol to the network "protocol" on the NT Server, because the remote startup service requests the DLC Communication Protocol and NetBEUI communication protocol; add the remote startup service to the "service" of the network.
2. Start the remote startup service in the network "service" and run the "remote start manager". First, obtain the nic id of the (diskless) workstation, then, create a profile file for it and remotely start the database records, which is the difficulty of General Nic configuration. The process is as follows:
1) obtain the nic id of the remote workstation and the hotspot Network
A) Open the remote workstation. The workstation does not actually start, but the NIC with Boot-ROM sends a Boot request to the server.
B) Click "refresh" on the "View" menu of "remote start manager" on the server ". The NIC record of the Remote Workstation appears. The NIC record includes the ID of the nic of the started remote workstation. If this network card is not the network card specified in the template file, a prompt is displayed after the network card number is not identified. In this case, you need to manually set it. Take the Accton EN166x Nic as an example. This card is compatible with the NE2000 card and can be configured according to the NE2000 card. The process is as follows:
(1) copy the clients \ rpl \ update directory on the nt server disk to the hard disk, modify the Ne200cpt. rpl file in the directory, and change the ID of the NE2000-compatible 004033 to the ID of the Accton EN166x Nic 0000E8;
② In the DOS window, type RPLCMD <Ne200cpt. rpl to generate a new Nic database. Then go back to the remote start manager and you will see that the nic id has been changed to NE2000 Compatible;
2) create profile files for (diskless) Workstation
In "remote start manager", open the "configuration" menu and click "Check Configuration" to check the available operating system of the remote start workstation, if the dos622 system file is entered in the directory "rpl \ rplfiles \ binfiles \ DOS622", related options of DOS622 appear in the Configuration box of the "Create configuration file" dialog box. Click "repair security ", the permissions in the \ system root \ RPL directory will be overwritten, the account will be created for the remote start workstation and the RPLUSER local account will be created, and the Lanman in the remote start workstation will be updated. the domain items in the ini file can match the domain/Workgroup of the server. In the "remote start" menu, click "create configuration file", as shown in dialog box 1. In the "configuration file name" box, type the configuration file name. In the "configuration" box, select a configuration consistent with your Nic and the specified operating system. For example, for a 3Com EtherLink III Nic, select DOS6.22 3Com EtherLink iii accton EN166x Nic and select DOS6.22 Novell NE2000.
3) create a remote startup database record for the workstation
In "remote start manager", select a NIC record and click "Switch adapter" on the "remote start" menu ".
A) In the "work station name" box, type the name of the work station and create an NT user account for the remote workstation.
B) In the description box, type the workstation description. The description provided by the network adapter.
C) select one of the two types of configuration. If the Workstation Shares the profile with another workstation, select share. If the workstation must use a personal copy of the profile to customize the workstation environment, select personal ".
D) In the workstation in the configuration file box, select a configuration file for the workstation.
E) Click "add. Hotspot Network
Open the remote workstation, remote workstation can be started to the MS-DOS state through the NT Server, the remote workstation operating system command file directory is: C: \ DOS, it corresponds to the directory \ RPL \ RPLFILES \ BITFILE \ DOS622 on the server. Remote (diskless) workstation through the NT Server can be directed to the MS-DOS state, then you can further software installation, such as: Windows31, Windows95 and Its Application Sharing, here is not much to mention.
