Remotely wake up computers in the office

In a network, when we implement remote maintenance and update, the remote computer may be shut down, so we have to find another person to open the computer. In fact, many motherboard and network cards now support the Remote Wake-up function. As long as we make necessary settings, we can remotely wake up our computer.

I. Preparations

To remotely wake up your computer, you must first support the motherboard. Most of the purchased mainboards now support the Network wake-up function, and also include Remote Wake-up through the nic and Remote Wake-up through the built-in modem. When the system is sleep and a wake-up debit card or Modem is passed in on the network, the system will be awakened for normal operation.

Now we can refer to the motherboard manual, find the Remote Wake-up connector, and connect the NIC or Modem with a dedicated power cord to the motherboard (1). Note that some boards have high requirements on power supply, for example, the author's motherboard MUST use ATX power when using the NIC for Remote Wake-Up, And the 5VSB must be greater than 600mA.

Tip: The wake-up connector of the NIC and Modem on the motherboard is different. The name of the wake-up connector of the NIC is WOL, and that of the Modem is WOM.

Next, you need to enter the BIOS settings of the motherboard, select "Power Management Setup", and set "Wake up on LAN/Modem" to "Enable" (figure 2 ), then install the NIC or Modem driver.

2. Enable Automatic System Logon

Since it is Remote Wake-up, it is impossible for a user to enter the login username and password after waking up a remote computer. In this case, we need to enable automatic login from the computer that wakes up.

Windows 98

Go to the control panel and find the "network" option, on the "configuration" tab, set "primary network logon" to "Windows logon" or "Microsoft friendly Logon" (Figure 3 ), open the "password" item in the "control panel" and switch the window to the "password properties" window, select the "all users on this computer use the same preferences and desktop configuration" option, and save the settings to exit and restart the computer for the settings to take effect.

TIPS: if the computer is used by multiple users, open the "user" item in the "control panel" to delete all users, and then continue with the above settings.

Windows 2000

Go to the control panel, double-click "user and password", and then cancel the "to use the local machine, the user must enter the user name and password" option on the "user" tab (figure 4 ), click "OK" to open the "Automatic Logon" setting window, enter the username and password for automatic logon, and click "OK.

Windows XP

In the "run" dialog box, enter "rundll32 netplwiz. dll, UsersRunDll" (figure 5), open the "User Account" window, and perform the same settings as in Windows 2000.

3. Obtain the NIC number

To remotely wake up a computer, you must know which computer on the network to wake up. That is, you must know the computer's network ID. Because the computer is shut down and sleep, the computer name and IP address cannot be used, and the MAC address of the NIC can only be used for identification.

TIPS: When we send a Remote Wake-up signal to the network, the controller chip of the wake-up computer can use a three-core connection line to send current and receive and process packets transmitted over the network, then, the three-core connection is used to send a boot command to remotely wake up the computer.

Windows 98/Me

In Windows 98/me, to access the macaddress of the network card, we only need to open the dialog box and enter “winip0000.exe to open the "IP configuration" window. The six hexadecimal numbers after "adapter address" are the Mac address of the network card, record the token (6 ).

Windows 2000/XP/2003

Click Open "run" window, enter "CMD" to enter the Command Prompt window, and enter the "Ipconfig/all" command at the command prompt to display the details of the NIC, find the line "Physical Address" and record the value following it as the Mac Address of the NIC (7 ).

Iv. Remote Wakeup

It is now in the crucial stage of implementation. We use a tool named Magic Packet to send Remote Wake-up packets. The download page of this tool isHttp://download.enet.com.cn/html/010062001052902.html. Install and run the downloaded Magic Packet as prompted.

Because the software does not create any projects on the desktop or in the Start menu, we need to import and export the software installation path. The default state is C: pcnetmagic_pkt and double-click the MAGPAC. EXE startup tool.

On the main interface of the software, click to open the "Magic Packets" menu and select the "Power On One Host" command (8 ), in "Destination Ethernet Address", enter the Mac Address of the computer Nic to be awakened, and click "Send" to Send the packet (9 ), in this way, the remote NIC will automatically start up and log on to the system.
