I. protocol consistency testing principles

Testing is the process of executing programs to discover errors. the testing methods can be divided into black box testing and white box testing. plan the test based on the product features, check whether each function of the program is implemented, and check for errors. This test is called a black box test or a function test. tests are planned based on the internal structure of the product, and check whether internal operations are performed as required, and whether all parts are fully utilized. This test is called a white-box test.

Protocols are rules that must be followed when devices communicate with each other. These rules are basically described in natural language. Because the implementers may have different understandings of the protocols, this may easily lead to different protocol implementations, and sometimes even the implementation of wrong protocols. therefore, we need an effective method to identify the protocol implementation. This method is "protocol test" ProtocolTesting ). protocol testing is developed based on software testing and is a function test, that is, black box testing. there are three types of protocol testing: consistency testing, interoperability testing, and performance testing. consistency testing is the basis for verifying whether the protocol implementation is consistent with the corresponding protocol standards by observing the Response Behavior in different environments and conditions, consistency tests only focus on external performance of protocol implementations. to ensure that different protocols can successfully communicate in the actual network, you also need to check whether the interaction process between a protocol and other systems is normal. This is an interoperability test. test the protocol performance, such as robustness and throughput. in this article, we will only introduce protocol consistency tests.

In essence, protocol consistency testing uses a set of test sequences to perform a black box test on the tested Protocol to implement IUT in a certain network environment, by comparing the similarities and differences between the actual output and the expected output of IUT, we can determine the degree to which IUT is consistent with the Protocol description, and determine the level of IUT power generated when it is interconnected through the consistency test. the protocol consistency test process consists of the following phases: A test set for the protocol to be tested is outlined based on the standard text of the Protocol; perform a test set on a specific implementation in a specific test environment; analyze the test results.
