  1. Open a command prompt. To do this, take any of the following actions based on your version of Windows:
    • Windows 8.1 and Windows 8: in the Start screen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen to display the charms, select Search, and then search for cmd. (Or, if you're using a keyboard or menu, type cmdin the Start screen.) In the search results, press and hold or right-click Command Prompt, and then select Run as Administrator.

  2. Stop the BITS service, the Windows Update service, and the cryptographic service. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt. Make sure that you press the Enter key after you type each command.

    • net stop Wuauserv
    • net stop server
    • net stop cryptsvc
  3. Delete the Qmgr*.dat file. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\microsoft\network\downloader\qmgr*.dat"

  5. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:cd/d%windir%\system32
  6. Re-register the BITS file and the Windows Update file. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt. Make sure that you press the Enter key after you type each command.
