SCCM TP4 Configuration Discovery method

Some configurations are required to initialize the SCCM server that has just been installed. SCCM Discovery identifies the computers and user resources that can be managed using Configuration Manager. It can also discover the network infrastructure in the environment. Discovery creates a discovery data record (DDR) for each discovered object and stores this information in the Configuration Manager database.

When resource discovery succeeds, Discovery places information about the resource in a file called Discovery Data Record (DDR). The DDR, in turn, is processed by the site server and entered into the Configuration Manager database, and database replication replicates the DDR for all sites in this database. Replication makes discovery data available in each site in the hierarchy, regardless of where the data is found or processed.

We can use discovery information to create custom queries and collections to logically group resources such as assigning custom client settings and managing tasks such as software deployment. Before you can install the Configuration Manager client on a device by using a Client Push Installation, you must first discover the computer. The specific way to configure SCCM discovery is as follows:

Log in to the SCCM server and open the SCCM Manager:
