Hi everyone! My name is Ken w.elmey. I am a 22-Year-Old freelance illustration and conceptual design artist. In this tutorial, I will introduce you to my latest personal file where is the yum? (Where are the delicious food ?) . This article describes a T-Rex which is looking for delicious food. The purpose of my work is to achieve a good balance between realism, story description, and funny.

Draft

I usually make several drafts before I start to draw a new file to determine the image structure (01 ). The dinosaurs in this article were actually drawn a long time ago. When I picked up the draft of the dinosaur again, I found that it was good enough to complete an illustration with the dinosaur as the main character.

I drew this image from two parts: a single background and a dinosaur and a chameleon. In this way, I can draw the two drafts in detail and merge them together in Photoshop. Another advantage of painting is that it will be very convenient to color the work in the future.

Basic colors

Now the most important part is coloring! The color technology I used is actually very simple. The basic process is similar to that of traditional oil paintings, from dark to bright. The most important thing at this stage is to select the correct color, because the next detailed color is based on the current color.

Tip: I like to draw a light source arrow in a separate layer, which can clearly remind me of the direction of the light source and the direction of the shadow.

Increase Realism

The current work seems so interesting, but it is far from the final work. Next, I created a new layer and set the layer superposition mode to normal to continue coloring. In terms of color details, I prefer the feeling of "messy-looking, so I used some different styles to create these effects (such as Figure 04 ). These brushes were made by Mike Nash, a super artist.

The advantage of using these brushes is to make the work look more like a traditional painting than a digital painting ". In the process of drawing at this stage, I don't think we should focus too much on increasing details, but on atmosphere and light (05 ). Therefore, at this stage, I will not enlarge the image to draw details, but will always observe the entire picture of the work. In the painting process, the most common method is to use a straw tool to absorb the nearby color and then change the color based on the color to complete the painting, I often create many layers when drawing these details, which makes it very convenient to modify.

Add details

Now let's start the real detail painting process! Like most artists, I like the detailed plotting process very much. This process is also the most time-consuming (06 ). Keep adding details and textures to make the work look more realistic, but note that the added details must be matched in harmony with the work. Too many unnecessary details may destroy your painting (07 ).

Color Correction and final fine-tuning

Now it seems that the work is basically complete. There are some other things that seem too dark and not gorgeous. We can easily adjust the layers and curves in Photoshop. For example, you can change the contrast to a blue color or use Channel Mixer to change the color of a light. 08. This makes the work more vivid and the role more vivid. Finally, I added a talk bubble to the dinosaur!
